When creating armor plates, clothing shells, mechanical panels, or raised surface details, extraction thickness determines whether the new geometry feels intentional or merely inflated. In ZBrush, the key controls are located under Tool > SubTool > Extract.
Start by masking the area that will become the new component. A clean mask produces a cleaner extraction, so refine its boundary before generating geometry. Use Grow Mask, Shrink Mask, Blur Mask, or Sharpen Mask to adjust the footprint and transition.
The Double option influences whether the extraction is created as a double-sided shell. This can be valuable for open clothing pieces or panels whose interior may be visible. For closed or heavily sculpted pieces, evaluate whether the additional surfaces are necessary, since they can complicate later cleanup.
Mask softness also affects the perceived thickness. A blurred mask creates a softer, more tapered transition, while a sharp mask produces a more defined border. For hard-surface work, sharpen the mask and consider enabling extraction options that preserve cleaner group boundaries. For cloth, a slightly softened edge often gives a more natural separation from the body.
A dependable workflow:
For production assets, think in real-world scale. Thin costume fabric should not have the same depth as protective armor, and manufactured panels usually require consistent wall thickness. If the result varies dramatically across the surface, the source mesh may contain uneven polygon density or abrupt curvature. Clean the source, extract at a modest value, and refine the new SubTool afterward rather than forcing an extreme thickness setting.
