Revit Tip: Establish Consistent Reference Plane Naming Standards in Revit

Consistently named reference planes make Revit models easier to build, edit, coordinate, and hand off. A clear naming standard turns invisible construction geometry into a reliable framework for families, layouts, and documentation.

Reference planes are often created quickly during modeling, then left with default names such as “Reference Plane” or “Reference Plane 1.” That may be acceptable in a simple sketch, but it becomes a serious coordination issue when multiple users need to select, constrain, dimension, or host elements to the same planes.

Use meaningful names as soon as a reference plane becomes part of the model logic.

  • Select the reference plane in a suitable view, then locate the Name field in the Properties palette.
  • Enter a descriptive name that identifies the plane’s purpose, not merely its creation order.
  • Press Enter to confirm the new name. Revit uses this name in relevant work planes, constraints, and selection lists.

A good name should help another team member understand the plane without having to inspect the model. For example, use names such as:

  • CL_Grid_A for a centerline aligned to Grid A
  • Wall Finish Face_North for a finish control plane
  • Door Centerline for a repeatable door placement reference
  • Ceiling Datum_2700 for a ceiling-control elevation
  • Kitchen Island Centerline for a layout axis
  • Facade Offset_150 for a controlled exterior offset

Avoid generic names such as “RP1,” “Temp,” “New Plane,” or “Reference Plane 5.” These labels do not communicate intent and become difficult to manage as the project grows. Also avoid naming a plane after a temporary modeling condition if it will remain in the project. A name such as “Wall Move” may make sense today but will be unclear during a renovation or future revision.

For larger projects, establish a simple naming convention before substantial modeling begins. A practical convention can combine:

  • Discipline or area: ARC, STR, MEP, Core, EastWing
  • Purpose: CL, Face, Datum, Offset, Alignment
  • Location: Grid reference, room, facade, or level
  • Value where useful: offset distance or elevation

For example, ARC_Face_Grid-B_Exterior is far more useful than “Plane 12.” The goal is not to create excessively long names; it is to make names searchable, understandable, and consistent.

Named reference planes are particularly valuable in the Family Editor. They can be assigned as work planes, used to host geometry, and referenced while building parametric relationships. In a door, window, casework, or equipment family, names such as Width Center, Frame Face, and Hardware Height help maintain clarity when editing constraints months later.

Follow these additional practices:

  • Name only planes that have a continuing modeling, coordination, or parametric purpose.
  • Use reference planes instead of model lines when defining non-printing control geometry.
  • Keep naming capitalization, separators, and abbreviations consistent across the team.
  • Review unused or duplicate planes during model cleanup to reduce clutter.
  • When working in families, confirm that critical planes have the correct Is Reference setting as well as a clear name.
