Displacement artifacts can undermine an otherwise convincing V-Ray render, appearing as cracks, faceted edges, stretched details, floating geometry, or unstable silhouettes. The most reliable solution is to diagnose the relationship between the displacement map, the base mesh, and the displacement settings before increasing render quality.
Start by checking the source geometry. V-Ray displacement adds or offsets detail at render time, but it cannot fully compensate for unsuitable topology. A low-resolution mesh may work for subtle surface breakup, yet it often fails when a map must create pronounced edges, deep grooves, or a visibly altered outline.
For most materials, begin with a conservative displacement amount and increase it gradually while viewing a close crop render. Large values are a common cause of broken edges and self-intersections. If the map is intended only to add fine texture—such as plaster grain, wood pores, or subtle fabric relief—consider using bump or normal mapping instead. Reserve true displacement for details that need to affect the object silhouette, cast shadows, or create meaningful depth.
Pay close attention to the displacement shift or midpoint behavior. Many grayscale maps are authored with middle gray representing the original surface level. If the shift is incorrect, the entire mesh may inflate or sink, causing intersections with nearby geometry. When a map should displace both inward and outward, use a balanced setup rather than treating black as the only neutral value.
Displacement should also be evaluated under the final lighting. Grazing light reveals small surface errors that may remain invisible in a flat viewport preview. Make test renders with strong side lighting and inspect silhouettes, corners, and areas where displaced objects meet floors, trims, or other geometry.
A practical workflow is to create a small material test object first: a flat plane, a curved surface, and a sharp-edged form. Apply the same map and settings intended for production, then adjust amount, shift, texture filtering, and subdivision until all three shapes render cleanly. Save that material configuration as a reusable preset for consistency across projects.
