Revit Tip: Create Purpose-Built 3D Views for Efficient Revit Coordination

A well-managed 3D view is one of the fastest ways to understand, coordinate, and communicate a Revit model. Rather than relying on the default {3D} view for every task, create purpose-built 3D views that isolate the information needed for design review, documentation, coordination, or presentation.

To create a new axonometric 3D view, open the View tab, select 3D View, and choose Default 3D View. Revit creates or opens the default view named {3D}. For a separate working view, use the drop-down under 3D View and choose Duplicate View, or right-click an existing 3D view in the Project Browser and select Duplicate View.

Creating distinct views for specific purposes prevents accidental changes to a shared coordination view and makes navigation more efficient. A practical 3D-view strategy might include:

  • Overall coordination: Displays architecture, structure, and linked MEP models for multidisciplinary reviews.
  • Discipline-specific views: Shows only the categories relevant to architecture, structural framing, mechanical systems, or electrical systems.
  • Presentation views: Uses materials, shadows, perspective, and a clean visual style.
  • Documentation views: Uses hidden-line graphics, section boxes, tags where appropriate, and controlled visibility settings.
  • Issue-review views: Isolates a problem area and can be placed on a sheet or exported for team communication.

After creating a view, rename it immediately in the Project Browser. Clear names such as 3D – Overall Coordination, 3D – Lobby Presentation, or 3D – Level 02 MEP Review make the model easier for every team member to navigate. Avoid generic names such as “3D View 1” or “Copy of {3D},” especially in collaborative projects.

Use the ViewCube to orient the model quickly. Click a corner for an isometric view, a face for an elevation-like orientation, or use the compass ring to rotate. Hold Shift while dragging the middle mouse button to orbit freely. Once the model is oriented, use Zoom, Pan, and SteeringWheels as needed to frame the content clearly.

For repeatable results, control the view rather than relying on temporary display changes:

  • Set Visual Style to Hidden Line, Shaded, Consistent Colors, or Realistic based on the purpose of the view.
  • Use Visibility/Graphics (VG or VV) to hide unnecessary categories and links.
  • Apply a View Template to enforce office standards and preserve consistent graphic settings.
  • Turn on a Section Box when the model needs to be cut down to a floor, zone, room, or coordination area.
  • Use Temporary Hide/Isolate for quick investigation, then convert the result into permanent visibility settings only when needed.

A valuable habit is to create a dedicated 3D coordination view before beginning model checks. Activate the section box, tighten it around the area under review, and hide categories that obscure the issue. This provides a far clearer environment for checking clearances, element connections, openings, and system routing than a full-building view.

For presentation-ready output, duplicate a clean 3D view rather than modifying the coordination version. Adjust its graphic display options, background, shadows, and detail level independently. This separation keeps technical review views functional while allowing polished visual communication.
