ZBrush’s Shrink Visibility command contracts the currently visible polygon area one polygon row at a time. It is especially useful when refining visibility boundaries, isolating recessed regions, or progressively hiding geometry without drawing another manual selection.
Begin by activating the desired SubTool and hiding part of its surface. Hold Ctrl+Shift and use the current selection brush to isolate the area you want to keep visible. Once a visibility boundary exists, open Tool > Visibility and click Shrink. Each click removes the outermost connected row of visible polygons along that boundary.
- Shrink is topology-dependent: It follows polygon connectivity rather than screen-space distance. Even edge flow produces predictable contraction, while irregular topology may create an uneven result.
- Only visibility changes: The command does not delete polygons, alter subdivision levels, or modify the sculpted surface.
- Repeated clicks are cumulative: Click Shrink several times to move the visible boundary inward gradually.
- Undo remains available: Use Ctrl+Z if the visible region contracts farther than intended.
A practical application is cleaning up a rough isolation. Suppose you use a rectangular or lasso selection to expose a patch around an eyelid, armor panel, or mechanical recess. The initial visibility border may include one or two unwanted polygon rows. Instead of attempting another precise selection, click Shrink until only the required working area remains.
Shrinking visibility also works well with masks. After isolating and contracting the visible geometry, create a mask from the visible region or sculpt only the exposed polygons. This provides tighter control near delicate borders and helps prevent accidental brush strokes on surrounding forms. Before applying strong deformations, soften the resulting mask when a gradual transition is required; a visibility boundary itself is topologically sharp.
Keep these workflow tips in mind:
- Use Grow, located in the same Visibility palette, to reverse the direction by revealing adjacent polygon rows.
- Enable PolyFrame with Shift+F to inspect exactly how each shrink operation follows the topology.
- On dense meshes, zoom in before shrinking so you can judge the number of removed rows accurately.
- If the result advances unpredictably, inspect for stretched polygons, disconnected islands, holes, or inconsistent edge density.
- Save a temporary Tool version before combining visibility operations with deletion, extraction, or topology changes.
For frequently repeated work, assign a custom hotkey by holding Ctrl+Alt and clicking the Shrink button, then pressing the desired key combination. Store the shortcut through Preferences > Hotkeys > Store so it remains available in future sessions.
