V-Ray Tip: Create Clear Architectural Sections with V-Ray Clipper

V-Ray Clipper is one of the fastest ways to communicate architectural intent without permanently editing the model. Rather than hiding objects or rebuilding geometry, use a Clipper object to create a clean, render-time section cut through a building, room, façade, or product assembly.

The key advantage is flexibility: move, rotate, or animate the clipping object to test different cut locations while leaving the original scene intact. This makes V-Ray Clipper especially useful for design reviews, construction visualizations, interior studies, and presentation images that need to reveal spatial relationships.

  • Start with a simple clipping volume. Place a V-Ray Clipper plane or mesh where the section should occur. A simple plane is ideal for a conventional elevation or sectional cut, while a closed mesh can isolate a more complex area of the design.
  • Align it precisely to the architecture. Snap the Clipper to a floor level, grid line, wall face, or ceiling datum. Small alignment errors can make a section feel accidental, especially when it intersects doors, furniture, curtain walls, or structural elements.
  • Use capping to make cuts readable. Enable the Clipper’s capping option when you want V-Ray to fill exposed cut surfaces. Without a cap, the render may reveal hollow walls, open floor slabs, or distracting internal geometry. A cap gives the section a deliberate, diagrammatic appearance.
  • Assign a distinct cap material. Use a neutral white, dark gray, clay, or branded color for the cap material so viewers can immediately distinguish cut geometry from the rest of the rendered scene. For technical presentation images, a solid cap material often reads better than a textured construction material.
  • Keep section materials simple. Highly reflective or heavily displaced cap materials can introduce noise and visual confusion. A diffuse or subtly rough material will render more predictably and maintain the graphic clarity of the cut.
  • Use multiple clippers cautiously. Multiple clipping objects can be effective for axonometric cutaways and detailed design studies, but each additional clipping operation adds complexity. Test the setup at low resolution before committing to a final render.

For the strongest result, pair the section cut with intentional camera and lighting choices. An orthographic or carefully controlled perspective camera helps preserve the technical clarity of the view. Use daylight or a soft studio-lighting setup to reveal depth within the exposed rooms. If the cut plane is visually dominant, consider reducing texture contrast in the surrounding model so the section remains the focal point.

V-Ray Clipper is also valuable during early design development. Instead of creating separate “cutaway” model files, save camera views and Clipper positions as part of your scene workflow. You can quickly produce alternate sections for a client meeting: a longitudinal cut, a cross section, a façade reveal, and an interior detail—all from the same source model.

Before final output, check these common issues:

  • Confirm that normals on modeled objects are correct; flipped faces can produce unexpected results at cut boundaries.
  • Inspect clipped transparent objects such as glass, curtains, and foliage, since they may need material or visibility adjustments for a clean diagram.
  • Render a cropped region around the cut to evaluate cap edges, indirect light, and material transitions.
  • Use high-resolution output when fine wall assemblies or furniture details need to remain legible.
