A well-designed Cinema 4D layout reduces repetitive clicks, keeps important controls visible, and helps you stay focused on the task at hand. Instead of adapting your workflow to the default interface, adapt the interface to the way you model, animate, shade, and render.

Start by considering which managers and tools you use most often. A motion designer may need constant access to the Object Manager, Attributes Manager, Timeline, and Fields controls. A look-development artist may prioritize the Material Manager, Node Editor, Render Settings, and Picture Viewer. Cinema 4D lets you arrange these panels into a workspace that supports your specific process.

  • Move panels by dragging their tabs. Click and drag a manager’s tab, such as Objects or Attributes, toward an edge or divider in the interface. Cinema 4D displays docking indicators to show where the panel will be placed.
  • Create tab groups for related tools. Dock managers together in the same area to avoid crowding the screen. For example, place the Material Manager, Asset Browser, and Content Browser in one tabbed region for asset-focused work.
  • Resize managers to suit the task. Give the Object Manager enough vertical space to inspect complex hierarchies. Expand the Attributes Manager when working with detailed parameters, then reduce it when you need more viewport room.
  • Use a larger viewport for modeling and composition. When evaluating silhouette, proportions, lighting, or camera framing, viewport space matters. Minimize or temporarily close panels that are not relevant to the current stage.

A practical approach is to build layouts around common production modes. For example:

  • Modeling layout: Large viewport, Object Manager, Attributes Manager, Coordinate Manager, and the Layers or Structure-related tools you use most.
  • Animation layout: Timeline visible at the bottom, with the Dope Sheet or F-Curve editor readily available alongside key object controls.
  • Materials and rendering layout: Material Manager or Node Editor, Asset Browser, Render Settings, and Picture Viewer arranged for quick iteration.
  • MoGraph layout: Object Manager, Attributes Manager, Fields list, and Timeline available without constantly switching menus.

Once your workspace is arranged, save it through Window > Customization > Save Layout As. Use descriptive names such as “Modeling,” “Animation,” or “LookDev.” Saved layouts can be recalled from the layout menu, letting you switch contexts quickly without rebuilding the interface every time.

For even faster access, assign shortcuts to frequently used layouts through Window > Customization > Customize Commands. This is especially useful when moving between modeling and animation throughout the day. Keep shortcuts memorable and avoid overriding keys you rely on for core tools.

Do not overlook command palettes and custom icon palettes. If you repeatedly use the same commands—such as Make Editable, Connect Objects + Delete, Extrude, Render Region, or Save Incremental—add them to a dedicated palette. A compact custom palette can eliminate repeated menu navigation while keeping your primary interface clean.

The goal is not to create the most elaborate interface; it is to create one that makes your next action obvious.
