Get cleaner, faster HDRI lighting by enabling V-Ray’s Adaptive Dome Light (ADL).
What it is: The Adaptive Dome Light analyzes your HDRI and the scene’s occlusion (doors, windows, skylights) to concentrate samples where they matter most. It replaces the need for manual skylight portals and dramatically reduces noise—especially in interiors lit by HDRIs.
- Fewer fireflies and splotches with high-contrast HDRIs.
- 2–7x speedups are common in interiors with small openings.
- More reliable than hand-placing portals; fewer moving parts to maintain.
- Works on CPU and GPU, interactive and final renders.
Setup (quick)
- Create a Dome Light and load your HDRI (spherical mapping).
- Enable the light’s Adaptive option (on by default in recent versions).
- Delete or disable legacy Portal Lights—ADL makes them unnecessary.
- For comp-friendly plates, set the Dome to Invisible; it still lights and reflects.
- Use VFB LightMix to add the Dome as a controllable light for interactive relighting.
Best practices and tuning
- HDRI choice: Prefer unclipped, high-dynamic-range maps. Clipped suns increase noise.
- Orientation: Rotate the HDRI rather than the scene to find the cleanest bounce paths.
- Adaptive resolution: For very detailed HDRIs or tiny openings, increase the Dome Light’s adaptive map resolution (e.g., from default to a higher value) to sharpen importance sampling. Expect a small memory cost.
- Noise threshold: Start at 0.02–0.03 for lookdev; 0.005–0.01 for finals.
- GI pairing: ADL plays well with Brute Force + Light Cache for balanced quality and speed.
- Finite Dome: When you need ground contact from an HDRI, enable Finite Dome; ADL still optimizes sampling.
Troubleshooting
- Still noisy in corners? Confirm portals are off, exposure is physically plausible, and there are no over-bright materials.
- Bright pin-lights in HDRI causing speckles: try a slightly softer HDRI, raise the adaptive map resolution, or clamp extreme highlights for lookdev passes.
- Multiple domes for LightMix: Keep the count low. Each added dome increases sampling complexity.
- Compositing edges: If using Invisible Dome, ensure the alpha pipeline matches your backplate workflow.
Workflow tips
- Use a material override for quick lighting tests; remove it for finals.
- Save LightMix states as separate EXRs for client reviews.
- Combine ADL with Cryptomatte and Light Select passes for painless comp control.
- Benchmark a standard interior with and without ADL to define your studio preset.
