ZBrush Tip: Morph Targets: A/B Comparison, Local Restoration, and Delta Extraction

ZBrush Tip of the Day

Use Morph Targets to A/B your sculpt, restore earlier states locally, and extract clean deltas without digging through Undo History.

Core workflow

  • Navigate to the subdivision level you want to evaluate (Morph Targets are stored per SubD level).
  • Tool > Morph Target > StoreMT before making changes. This captures a pristine “before” state for that level.
  • Sculpt freely. Toggle Tool > Morph Target > Switch for instant before/after checks.
  • Select the Morph brush to paint back the stored state locally. Adjust ZIntensity for subtle blends.
  • When done, Tool > Morph Target > DelMT to clear and StoreMT again for the next iteration.

Practical use cases

  • Micro-detail sanity check: StoreMT at high SubD, add pores/wrinkles, then Switch to confirm you’re enhancing form—not burying it.
  • Shape exploration: Duplicate a SubTool, StoreMT, try a bold variant, and use the Morph brush to blend in just the successful areas.
  • Cleanup pass: After aggressive clay buildup, use the Morph brush to quickly restore planes along noses, eyelids, and knuckles.
  • Client reviews: Assign a hotkey to Switch for rapid A/B during calls. Keep changes readable and focused.

Pro tips

  • StoreMT with Layers turned off (not recording) to keep responsibilities clear: Layers for versions, Morph Targets for comparisons.
  • For crisp local restores, lower Focal Shift (e.g., -50 to -80) on the Morph brush; for soft blends, use a large radius and higher Focal Shift.
  • Combine with Mask by Cavity or Mask by Smoothness to protect fragile micro features while restoring broader forms.
  • Need a physical “difference” mesh? Use Tool > Morph Target > CreateDiffMesh to generate a new SubTool that contains only your sculpted delta—great for wrinkle stamps or blendshape authoring.
  • StoreMT separately at any SubD levels you intend to evaluate; each level maintains its own target.

Avoid these pitfalls

  • Any operation that changes point order invalidates the target: DynaMesh, Sculptris Pro, ZRemesher, Boolean remesh, deleting/adding points, or certain Mirror/Weld operations.
  • If topology changes are required, DelMT and StoreMT again after the change.
  • Don’t rely on Undo in place of Morph Targets for reviews; Undos shift your entire session state and can obscure intent.

Speed enhancements

  • Hotkey Tool > Morph Target > Switch (Ctrl+Alt+click to assign) for rapid A/B.
  • Save a custom UI layout with the Morph Target palette docked for one-click access.
  • Record quick turntables showing both states for stakeholders; Switch during capture to communicate deltas clearly.
