Bluebeam Tip: Optimize PDF Printing in Bluebeam Revu

Optimize Bluebeam Revu’s PDF printing to balance clarity, file size, and downstream usability.

  • Choose the right engine
    • Use “Bluebeam PDF” for vector-accurate output. Only enable “Rasterize” if transparency or complex blends drop out on print.
    • For stubborn drivers, try “Print as Image” as a last resort.
  • Control resolution and size
    • DPI: 300 dpi is a reliable default; 600 dpi for fine lineweights/details; 150–200 dpi for quick review sets.
    • In Bluebeam Administrator > PDF Printer Defaults: set image compression (JPEG for photos, ZIP for line art), enable downsampling where appropriate, and subset embedded fonts.
  • Preserve data and navigation
    • Enable Hyperlinks and Bookmarks (from page labels or selected headings) to keep sets navigable.
    • Include Layers when publishing multi-trade sets; this lets recipients toggle disciplines without reprinting.
  • Markups and deliverables
    • Internal reviews: Print with Markups unflattened for editability.
    • Issue sets: Flatten Markups to lock revisions; consider retaining hyperlinks and metadata on flatten.
  • Scale and paper handling
    • Use Actual Size for scale-critical prints; avoid Fit to Paper on measured sets. Add a scale bar to title blocks for verification.
    • Match sheet and paper sizes; create custom page sizes for odd formats to prevent auto-scaling.
    • Enable Line Merge if solid fills or hatches obscure linework.
  • Standards and compliance
    • When archiving/submittals require it, publish to PDF/A-1b from Administrator settings.
    • Create named presets (e.g., “Issue 600dpi + Layers”) and share via Profiles for team consistency.
  • Batch and troubleshooting
    • Use Batch Print/Sets for large packages; verify order with page labels.
    • If content drops out, toggle Rasterize, disable overprint simulation, or turn off Advanced Printing Features in Windows printer properties.
