AutoCAD Tip: Safe DWG Recovery and Prevention Workflow

When a DWG won’t open or behaves unpredictably, follow this safe, step-by-step workflow to maximize recovery and preserve data integrity.

Before you touch the file

• Work on a copy. Duplicate the DWG and all associated Xrefs into a quarantine folder.
• Collect backups: rename the .bak to .dwg and locate autosaves (.sv$) in your AutoSave folder; rename to .dwg and test.
• Pause sync. Temporarily stop cloud-sync tools while recovering to avoid version conflicts.
• Note dependencies. List attached Xrefs, images, PDFs, point clouds, and custom fonts/shapes.

First-response tools (in this order)

• Drawing Recovery Manager: launch DRAWINGRECOVERY and open the most recent healthy entry.
• Open with repair: start AutoCAD empty, run RECOVER on the DWG; then run RECOVERALL to repair the host and its Xrefs.
• Validate and clean: run AUDIT with “Y” to fix errors; then -PURGE (repeat for All and Regapps), and finish with OVERKILL on problematic geometry.

If the file opens but remains unstable

• WBLOCK rewrite: select good geometry and WBLOCK it to a fresh DWG (this rebuilds the database cleanly).
• Insert/Xref-bind method: start from a clean template, XREF attach the bad file, then BIND (Insert) and purge; or try INSERT as a block and then explode.
• DXF round-trip: DXFOUT to ASCII (e.g., 2010), then DXFIN into a new drawing to strip corruption.
• Selective copy: use COPYBASE from the source and PASTECLIP into a clean file, in logical chunks.
• Partial open: use PARTIALOPEN to load only needed layers, then clean and save.

If the file will not open at all

• Try the .bak or .sv$ versions first.
• Convert versions with DWGCONVERT (or Autodesk DWG TrueView) to an earlier format, then RECOVER.
• Detach suspects: open without Xrefs by renaming the Xref folder, then fix the host and reattach one-by-one.

Proxy and DGN baggage

• Reduce proxy issues by exporting: -EXPORTTOAUTOCAD to convert vertical objects to native entities when sharing.
• Purge registered apps regularly: -PURGE → Regapps (repeat until none remain). Consider vendor-provided DGNPURGE tools if needed.

Prevention checklist

• Run AUDIT and -PURGE before archiving or transmitting.
• Use ETRANSMIT to package Xrefs, fonts, and plot styles cleanly.
• Save locally, then sync to cloud; avoid working live out of sync folders.
• Keep add-ins updated; remove unstable plug-ins.
• Tune AutoSave/Backups and test restores quarterly.
