Make your annotations read perfectly at any scale by embracing annotative objects and controlling the Annotation Scale with intent.

  • Each annotative object can store multiple scales. Viewports show only the representations that match their annotation scale.

Set up once, reuse everywhere:

  • Create styles with annotative behavior enabled:
    • Text Styles: set paper height (e.g., 2.5 mm or 3/32").
    • Dimension and MLeader Styles: enable Annotative so arrowheads and text scale correctly.
    • Blocks: check “Annotative” when creating or editing if they must read at paper size.
  • Save these in your template (DWT) to enforce consistency across projects.

Recommended workflow:

  1. In Model Space, set the desired Annotation Scale on the status bar before placing notes, dims, and symbols.
  2. Place only annotative styles/blocks so paper height is honored across scales.
  3. In Paper Space, create viewports and set their scales. Lock viewports once correct to prevent accidental changes.
  4. If needed, toggle automatic scale management on the status bar (AnnoAutoScale) so objects gain new scale representations as you change the current annotation scale.

Managing existing geometry:

  • Use Properties to verify an object is Annotative and to view its Scale List.
  • Add or remove scale representations with OBJECTSCALE or via Properties > Annotation > Add/Delete Scales.
  • Copy annotative behavior and scales with MATCHPROP (enable the Annotative option in its settings).
  • Clean up bloated or corrupted scale lists using -SCALELISTEDIT > Reset to standards.

Troubleshooting fast:

  • Annotation “disappears”: The viewport’s annotation scale doesn’t match the object’s scales. Add the missing scale with OBJECTSCALE, or temporarily set ANNOALLVISIBLE=1 to reveal all representations for diagnosis.
  • Too many duplicate scales: Reset the list with -SCALELISTEDIT; then add back only what your office standard requires.
  • Cluttered selections: Set SELECTIONANNODISPLAY=0 if showing all scale reps during selection becomes distracting.

  • Standardize paper heights and approved scales in your DWT; this avoids per-project guesswork.
  • Lock viewports after setting scale to preserve annotation fidelity through plotting.
  • Avoid exploding annotative blocks/dimensions—you’ll lose their scaling intelligence.
  • For mixed legacy content, convert key notes and dims to annotative to stabilize output quality across details and plans.
