V-Ray Tip: VRayMtlTwoSided for Fast, Accurate Thin-Surface Translucency

Harness VRayMtlTwoSided to render believable thin, translucent surfaces—fast and clean—without heavy subsurface scattering.

What it is

  • VRayMtlTwoSided (aka VRay2SidedMtl / V-Ray Two Sided) blends a front and a back material and lets light pass through a single polygon shell using a Translucency control.
  • Ideal for curtains, paper, leaves, lampshades, thin plastics, and fabrics where thickness is negligible.
  • If no Back material is provided, the Front is used with flipped normals for efficiency.

Core setup

  • Assign: Front = your primary shader; Back = optional variant (warmer/cooler tint, slightly different roughness).
  • Translucency color/texture controls how much light passes through:
    • Black = opaque (Front dominates); White = fully translucent (Back/light shows through).
    • Use a “thickness” or grayscale weave map to localize translucency and sell realism.
  • Use single-sided geometry. If your DCC has a “double-sided” object/renderer toggle, disable it to avoid double lighting and flicker.
  • Keep sub-materials thin-walled: avoid refraction in Front/Back unless the object is actually solid; rely on TwoSided’s translucency for light transmission.

Recommended starting points

  • Curtains and sheers:
    • Front/Back: Fabric VRayMtl with low gloss (roughness ~0.5–0.7), subtle bump/normal for weave.
    • Translucency: 0.6–0.85 (use a fabric weave map to keep micro-detail crisp).
    • Tip: Warm the Back slightly to mimic interior light warmth.
  • Lampshades:
    • Back slightly warmer, Front neutral.
    • Drive Translucency with a paper/weave texture; place a VRayLight or VRayLightMtl bulb inside for believable glow without fireflies.
  • Leaves and thin plastics:
    • Use a thickness map (veins darker, thin areas lighter) in Translucency.
    • Add subtle normal + roughness variation; a slight green/yellow shift in Back enhances chlorophyll backscatter feel.

Quality and performance

  • TwoSided is far cheaper than full SSS for thin assets; expect faster convergence in interiors.
  • Pair with Adaptive sampling and the V-Ray Denoiser (moderate strength) to preserve fabric/weave micro-detail.
  • For animations, keep translucency maps mip-mapped and filtered to prevent shimmer; use VRayBitmap where available.

Common pitfalls (and fixes)

  • Blotchy backlighting: raise light sample quality or reduce extreme HDR highlights; clamp if necessary.
  • Flat results: introduce Back color temperature shift, thickness textures, and micro-bump to catch grazing light.
  • Noise inside lampshades: prefer area lights over tiny point sources; a low-intensity VRayLightMtl bulb plus area light often stabilizes sampling.
  • Normals chaos: ensure consistent normals; TwoSided expects clean, outward-facing normals on the mesh.

  • Supported on CPU and GPU; verify your V-Ray GPU build supports TwoSided in your DCC.
  • Use Multi-Matte or Object/Material IDs to isolate curtains/leaves in compositing without breaking translucency.
