ZBrush Tip: ZBrush Cavity Masking for Recessed Detail Polypainting

Cavity masking is a fast way to place color inside wrinkles, pores, panel lines, scales, and other recessed details. Instead of painting every depression manually, ZBrush analyzes the sculpted surface and creates a mask based on curvature.

  • Prepare sufficient geometry. Cavity detection depends on actual surface detail. Move to a subdivision level that clearly displays the forms you want to color. Fine pores may require the highest subdivision level, while broad folds are often better isolated at a medium level.
  • Enable Polypaint. Open Tool > Polypaint and activate Colorize. Select a neutral material so lighting does not obscure the color result. If the model has no base color, choose one and use Color > FillObject with RGB enabled.
  • Create the cavity mask. Open Tool > Masking and click Mask By Cavity. ZBrush calculates a mask from the model’s recessed areas. Because masked polygons are protected, use Tool > Masking > Inverse when you want to paint directly into those cavities.
  • Inspect before painting. Rotate the model and verify that the mask captures useful forms rather than unwanted surface noise. Use the masking controls to blur, sharpen, grow, or shrink the result. A slightly softened mask usually produces more natural coloration than a hard boundary.
  • Apply color globally. Choose a darker or warmer color, set the brush to RGB mode, and disable ZAdd so the operation affects color without sculpting. Use Color > FillObject to fill every exposed cavity consistently, or paint selected areas by hand for greater variation.

Keep the color change subtle. Pure black in every recess usually makes a sculpt look outlined or artificially dirty. For skin, try muted reds, purples, or warm browns at low RGB Intensity. Armor and machinery often benefit from cool grime colors, oxidized tones, or desaturated browns. Organic scales can use a darker version of the base hue to strengthen separation without appearing painted on.

Cavity masking also combines effectively with layered Polypaint. Apply one pass to broad creases, soften or clear the mask, then generate another pass at a higher subdivision level for pores and micro-detail. Varying the hue and intensity between passes prevents a uniform procedural appearance.

  • Store a Morph Target or save a new ZTool version before major painting changes.
  • Temporarily switch materials to confirm that apparent contrast comes from Polypaint rather than shader highlights.
  • Clear the mask through Tool > Masking > Clear when finished.
  • Always review the result from presentation distance; micro-detail should support the form, not overpower it.
