Revit Tip: Standardize Revit Views with View Templates

Consistent views are essential for reliable documentation. In Revit, the most effective way to lock view standards is to combine well-structured View Templates with clear team rules for when views may be overridden.

A View Template stores and controls view properties such as visibility, graphics, scale, filters, discipline, detail level, crop settings, and annotation categories. When it is assigned to a view, controlled properties cannot be casually changed in that individual view. This protects your office standards while reducing repetitive setup work.

Build standards around View Templates

  • Create templates by purpose: Separate templates for working plans, permit plans, presentation plans, reflected ceiling plans, coordination views, sections, elevations, and 3D views.
  • Use clear names: A naming convention such as VT_A_Plan_Permit_100 or VT_MEP_Coordination_50 makes template selection predictable.
  • Control only what should be standardized: In the View Template Properties dialog, select the settings that must remain consistent across all assigned views.
  • Leave intentional flexibility: Do not control a property if individual views legitimately need to vary. For example, crop regions, view names, or specific linked-model display settings may require project-specific adjustments.

The key is to distinguish between standards and exceptions. Lineweights, visibility settings, discipline, detail level, phase filters, and graphic filters are usually standards. Annotation placement, crop extents, and dependent-view boundaries are more often exceptions.

Use the “non-controlled” settings carefully

Every View Template includes an Include list that determines which properties it governs. If a user needs to adjust a controlled setting in a view, Revit will prevent the edit. The correct solution is not to remove the template permanently; instead, review whether that property should be excluded from template control for all similar views.

  • Use a dedicated alternate template when a recurring exception is needed.
  • Avoid manually overriding view graphics to solve a template problem.
  • Do not duplicate templates for minor one-time differences; this creates template sprawl.
  • Document approved exceptions so the team understands which template to use.

Apply templates early and audit them often

Assign templates as soon as new views are created. This prevents users from building views with inconsistent scale, graphics, or visibility settings and then trying to correct them later. For large projects, use the Project Browser to group views by discipline and purpose, making it easier to identify views that should share a template.

Periodically review the View Template column in a view list or schedule. Views with no assigned template are potential coordination risks. Also compare similarly named views across disciplines to verify that their templates support the intended output.

For firms developing stronger Revit workflows, templates should be part of the project template—not rebuilt from scratch on every project.
