Named Views are one of Rhino’s most practical tools for keeping a project organized, especially when a model must be reviewed, revised, documented, or presented from consistent angles. Instead of manually navigating back to the same perspective each time, save it once and recall it instantly.

In Rhino, a Named View records more than a camera direction. Depending on the view type and settings, it can preserve the viewport position, target, projection, lens length, display mode, and even the visibility state of layers. This makes Named Views useful for everything from design reviews to layout preparation.

To begin, position a viewport exactly as needed. This might be a close-up of a connection detail, a perspective product shot, a front elevation, or an isometric construction view. Then run the NamedView command, choose Save, and assign a clear name.

  • Use descriptive names such as Exterior_Perspective, Plan_Level_02, or Detail_Bracket_A.
  • Include a revision or presentation stage when appropriate, such as Lobby_View_Option_B.
  • Avoid vague labels like View1 or Final; they become confusing as a project grows.

The fastest workflow is to create a set of standard views early in the project. For example, save the primary plan, front, side, isometric, and presentation perspectives before modeling becomes complex. As the design evolves, you can return to these positions reliably rather than spending time orbiting, panning, and zooming into approximate locations.

For controlled presentations, Named Views are especially valuable. Save several viewpoints that tell the design story in sequence: an overall view, a user-scale view, a material close-up, and a technical detail. During a meeting, double-clicking a saved view produces a clean, repeatable transition without exposing unplanned working angles or temporary construction geometry.

Use the Named Views panel to manage your collection. You can:

  • Restore a view at any time to return the active viewport to its saved condition.
  • Update a saved view when the camera framing needs refinement.
  • Rename views as the project develops.
  • Delete obsolete viewpoints to keep the file easy to navigate.

A useful practice is to pair Named Views with layer organization. Before saving a presentation view, hide construction curves, reference geometry, alternate options, and any working layers that should not appear. Save the view with the desired layer state if your Rhino version and workflow support it. This helps ensure that a restored view is not only framed correctly, but also visually clean.

For layouts, Named Views can provide dependable source viewpoints for detail viewports. Establish the camera and projection in model space first, save the Named View, then use it as a reference when building presentation sheets. This approach reduces accidental changes and helps maintain consistency across drawings and exported PDFs.

Remember that a Named View is a camera bookmark, not a live link to an object. If geometry moves, the saved camera may need updating. After making major changes, review key Named Views and update only those whose framing no longer supports the design intent.
