ZBrush Tip: Frame (F): Instant SubTool and Polygroup Centering

Quick focus equals speed. Frame (F) instantly centers the active SubTool or whatever is currently visible—down to a single polygroup—so you spend time sculpting, not wrestling the camera.

  • Center the active SubTool: Press F to fit the active SubTool to view and reset the navigation pivot to its visible bounds.
  • Focus a single polygroup: Ctrl+Shift+Click a polygroup to isolate it, then press F. You’ll snap to a clean, tight view of just that part.
  • Jump between parts fast: Alt+Click directly on any piece in the canvas to activate its SubTool, then hit F. This is the quickest way to traverse complex kits.
  • Solo + Frame: Tap Solo to mute distractions, then F to fit the active SubTool precisely. Great for small-detail passes.
  • Control your pivot behavior:
    • Transform > Local OFF: rotation occurs around the framed object’s center—predictable for layout.
    • Transform > Local ON: rotation follows the last stroke/point—tap F any time to recenter on what’s visible.
  • Use visibility to your advantage: Hide regions (Ctrl+Shift Lasso/SelectRect). F respects what’s visible, so you can frame just the area you want to detail.
  • Polyframe assist: Shift+F to reveal polygroups before isolating; isolate a group, then F for a perfect fit.
  • Gizmo synergy: After F, click the Gizmo 3D Home icon to center/align the manipulator to the framed mesh. Camera and transforms stay in sync.
  • Performance edge: On heavy tools, isolating a polygroup and pressing F reduces screen redraw, making strokes snappier.

Micro-workflow: Hard-surface panel polish

  • Shift+F to review polygroups.
  • Ctrl+Shift+Click a panel to isolate.
  • F to frame tight.
  • Refine with TrimDynamic and Polish by Features.
  • Ctrl+Shift+Click empty canvas to reveal all; repeat.

Micro-workflow: Character detail hop

  • Alt+Click the ear SubTool to activate.
  • F to frame; add pores with DamStandard and alphas.
  • Alt+Click the eyes; F to snap; refine edges with Pinch/ClayBuildup.

Troubleshooting

  • If F doesn’t seem to reframe, clear masks (Ctrl+Drag on empty canvas) and unhide all (Ctrl+Shift+Click empty canvas), then try again.
  • Ensure Edit mode (T) is active—otherwise you’ll frame the 2.5D canvas, not your 3D tool.
  • Turn off Dynamic Perspective temporarily if the fit feels too tight at extreme FOVs.

Customize it

  • Map Frame to a pen button: Preferences > Hotkeys > Press F > Assign > Store.
  • Save your UI: Preferences > Config > Store Config so F and your layout persist.
