ZBrush Tip: Anatomy-Driven Retopology for Predictable Deformation

Smart retopology preserves your sculpt and keeps deformations clean, predictable, and easy to rig. Plan edge flow to follow anatomy and motion first—detail comes later.

  • Start with analysis: mark major bend zones (shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles, mouth, eyes, jaw) directly on the sculpt with Polypaint or temporary masks.
  • Favor all-quads with even-sized polygons. Place poles (5-valence) only in flatter, low-deformation areas; never on crease lines or extreme bends.
  • Concentrate density where forms change direction during motion; relax density on broad, rigid surfaces to keep rigs responsive and UVs clean.
  • Use ZRemesher with the ZRemesher Guides brush to “draw” muscle and wrinkle flow. Enable KeepGroups and DetectEdges to protect critical borders.
  • Remesh incrementally: run at Half with AdaptiveSize ~25–35 to maintain features, then refine with ZModeler (Insert/Slide Edge Loop, Bridge, Close Hole) for surgical control.
  • Project progressively: subdivide → Project All → inspect → repeat. Clean any projection noise before the next pass to avoid baking artifacts later.
  • Pose-test early: with Transpose Master, rotate elbows and knees 90°, twist forearms 45°, raise/lower shoulders. Look for candy-wrapper twists, star-pinch, or collapsing creases.
  • UVs follow topology: place seams along hidden or low-stretch lines that align to your loops (back of limbs, inner thighs, behind ears, scalp partings).
  • Export safely: maintain scale and orientation using FBX or GoZ. For portfolio props, Decimation Master is fine; for animation, keep the clean quad cage.

Edge flow by region:

  • Face: circular loops around mouth and eyes; route support loops along nasolabial folds and eyelids; place poles on the forehead/cheek flats; keep jaw hinge loops clean for open-close and side glide.
  • Shoulder girdle: wrap loops over the deltoid cap connecting to pecs/clavicle in front and scapula in back; add sliding loops to accommodate clavicle lift and scapular glide.
  • Elbow/knee: stack 2–3 loops perpendicular to the bend axis; shift poles away from the hinge line; keep even edge length across the crease.
  • Forearm/wrist and calf/ankle: include spiral-friendly topology to tolerate twist; add a stabilizing loop above and below the joint.
  • Hands/feet: loop around knuckles and webbing; isolate nail beds with a tight loop; keep toe/heel loops broad for stable contact.
  • Hips/glutes: follow gluteal fold and TFL/iliac crest; reserve extra loops across the front hip crease for thigh lift.
  • Torso/back: run loops along obliques and lats; maintain a calm centerline over the spine with evenly spaced quads.

Quality checks:

  • Silhouette integrity holds during extreme bends without stair-stepping.
  • Creases form predictably along loop directions, not diagonally.
  • Weights paint smoothly with minimal corrective shapes.
