AutoCAD Tip: Best Practices for AutoCAD External References (Xrefs)

External references (Xrefs) keep drawings lean, synchronized, and easier to collaborate on. Use these field-tested practices to get predictable results and fewer surprises at plot time.

  • Choose the right reference type
    • DWG Xref: Best for live coordination with other disciplines and model backgrounds.
    • PDF underlay: Great for markups and consultant backgrounds you don’t need to edit.
    • DWF/DWFx: Lightweight for review sets with baked-in fidelity.
    • Images/rasters: Use for scans or logos; keep paths short and file sizes modest.
    • Point clouds: Ideal for as-built conditions; clip and decimate for performance.
  • Prepare host and source drawings
    • Units: Set INSUNITS consistently in both host and source; run -DWGUNITS on legacy files.
    • Origin: Align on 0,0,0 and avoid very large coordinates to prevent graphics lag.

    • Reload to pull updates; Unload to improve performance without breaking attachment; Detach only if the relationship is permanently removed.

    • Enable demand loading (XLOADCTL=2) for network-based Xrefs.
    • In source files, set INDEXCTL=3 to create spatial and layer indices for faster open and clip.
    • Freeze heavy Xref layers in viewports instead of turning them off globally.

    • Use XCLIP to limit what you see and plot; set XCLIPFRAME=0 to hide clip boundaries in plots.
