Revit Tip: Revit Pre-Flight QC Checklist

A concise, field-tested Quality Control checklist you can run before every Revit deliverable to reduce rework and RFIs.

Pre-flight and Model Health

  • Audit on open; review warnings and drive the total below an agreed threshold (track top offenders weekly).
  • Purge Unused carefully (twice), then delete orphaned views, groups, and line patterns; remove unused materials and render assets.
  • Confirm Project Information, Location, and Shared Coordinates. Pin Survey/Base Points; verify True North vs Project North.
  • Set Project Units (precision, rounding); verify level elevations and grid naming conventions.

Views and Templates

  • All plotted views use a View Template; no temporary hide/isolate; Section Box off unless intentional.
  • View Range, Phase Filter, and Design Options consistent with the sheet intent.
  • Filters are named and documented; category overrides minimized and standardized.
  • Working views are excluded from sheets and clearly prefixed (e.g., _WK_).

Annotations and Graphics

  • Text/Dimensions use office standards; no “None” text style; leaders and arrows consistent.
  • Dimensions reference stable geometry (references or locked datums); spot elevations/slopes validated.
  • Tags read from the correct parameters; room/space tags present with verified numbers and names.
  • Keynote file path verified; legends are view-independent and coordinated.

Families and Parameters

  • Purge unused family types; verify nested families, visibility settings, and reference planes.
  • Shared Parameters align with office standard GUIDs; unit types and parameter types correct.
  • Type Marks unique; fire rating, assembly code, and specification parameters populated where required.
  • Classification fields (OmniClass/UniFormat) and IFC parameters completed for exports.

Schedules and Quantities

  • Sorting, filtering, and formatting match deliverable intent; phase-aware where applicable.
  • Calculated values documented; hidden fields used intentionally; totals verified against model counts.
  • Key Schedules drive consistency for rooms, doors, and finishes.

Sheets, Revisions, and Issue Sets

  • Title block parameters populated (Project, Sheet Number/Name, Scale, Issue, Revisions, Consultant data).
  • Viewport alignment and scale standards enforced; placeholder sheets reconciled.
  • Revision clouds assigned to the correct sequence; revision schedule cleansed of old/unused entries.

Links, CAD, and Coordinates

  • RVT links By Shared Coordinates; paths set to Relative; unused links unloaded; “Room Bounding” set as needed.
  • CAD files linked (not imported), cleaned (layers, units, purge), and on their own workset.
  • Design Option and Workset visibility verified across deliverable views.

Exports and Deliverables

  • PDF: standardized naming, vector quality, fonts embedded, print styles applied; test a batch set.
  • DWG: export setup mapped to your CAD standard; units, layers, and hatches validated.
  • IFC: correct setup/template, property sets, base quantities, and classification export verified.
  • Navisworks: NWC from publish views, shared coordinates, linked files included per coordination plan.

Automation and Oversight

  • Create a “QC Dashboard” sheet with color-fill and schedules surfacing missing data (“TBD”, nulls, duplicates).
  • Use Dynamo or lightweight macros to flag noncompliant elements and populate required parameters.
  • Document the QC run (date, who, key findings) and archive with the issue set.
