Revit Tip: Organize the Project Browser with Schemes, Filters, and Parameters

Keep your Project Browser purposeful by using Browser Organization filters to surface only what teams need, when they need it.

Access and create schemes

  • Right‑click Views, Sheets, or Schedules in the Project Browser > Browser Organization, or go to View tab > User Interface > Browser Organization.
  • Duplicate a default scheme or click New to create one for each category (Views, Sheets, Schedules).
  • Define Grouping and Sorting, then add Filters to hide clutter and spotlight active work.

Proven grouping patterns for Views

  • By Discipline > Sub‑Discipline > View Type > Associated Level for fast, logical navigation across large, multi‑discipline models.
  • By Phase > Discipline > Purpose (custom parameter) to separate existing, new, and demo documentation streams.
  • By Purpose > View Type > Detail Level to keep “Working,” “Coordination,” and “Publish” views distinct.

Smart filters that reduce noise

  • Not on Sheet vs On Sheet: Filter by Sheet Number (has value / is empty) to isolate views awaiting placement.
  • Work‑in‑Progress gating: Add a Text or Yes/No parameter (e.g., View Purpose or Publish) to Views; filter so only Publish = Yes appears in your “Issued” scheme.
  • Discipline fences: Filter by Discipline to keep Architecture, Structure, and MEP focused and independent.

Custom parameters that power organization

  • Create a Project or Shared parameter “View Purpose” (Text) applied to Views; options like Working, Coordination, Documentation, Render.
  • Create “Sheet Package” (Text) applied to Sheets to group by issue set (e.g., 30% SD, 60% DD, 100% CD, Permit, Bid).
  • Use numeric prefixes to force reliable order (e.g., 01 Architecture, 02 Structure, 03 MEP) in Discipline or Sub‑Discipline values.
  • Add these parameters to View Templates so the purpose is auto‑assigned when templates are applied.

Sheets and Schedules organization

  • Sheets: Group by Sheet Package > Discipline > Sheet Number; filter Appears in Sheet List = Yes to hide placeholders.
  • Schedules: Group by Category or Purpose; filter out Key Schedules to keep only deliverable takeoffs visible.

Team workflow tips

  • Keep schemes simple and memorable. Two to four levels of grouping is usually enough.
  • Name schemes clearly (e.g., “Views – Publish by Discipline” vs “Views – Working by Level”).
  • Save schemes in your template and distribute via Transfer Project Standards when needed.
  • Combine with right‑click > Search (Ctrl+F) to jump straight to any view or sheet.
  • Review quarterly: prune unused schemes and align naming with your BIM Execution Plan.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Over‑filtering that hides views from less‑experienced users—test with multiple roles before adopting.
  • Inconsistent parameter values—standardize via View Templates and a short naming key.
  • Too many one‑off schemes—standardize on a small set per discipline and phase.
