AutoCAD Tip: Standardize AutoCAD Text Styles for Consistent, Scalable Annotations

Clear, consistent annotations start with disciplined Text Styles. Here’s how to create and manage them so every sheet reads perfectly at any scale.

  • Plan your style system
    • Define a small, purposeful set: e.g., TXT-Notes, TXT-Dims, TXT-Titles, TXT-RoomTags.
    • Use a naming convention that reflects use, not font names, so you can swap fonts without renaming.
    • Document the system in your template and CAD standards guide.
  • Create styles properly (STYLE)
    • Open Text Style Manager (STYLE).
    • Pick fonts: SHX (performance, clarity) vs TTF (branding, readability). SIMPLEX.SHX and ISOCP.SHX are robust; Arial/Calibri are common TTFs.
    • Set Height = 0 for all general-purpose styles. This lets MTEXT, DIMSTYLE, and MLEADERSTYLE control height per need.
    • Width Factor: 0.9–1.0 for most documentation; avoid squeezing below 0.8 to maintain legibility.
    • Oblique Angle: 0 unless an italic look is required.
    • Enable Annotative for styles intended to scale automatically across viewports.
    • For Asian character sets, assign a Big Font where appropriate.
  • Standard paper heights (guidelines)
    • General notes: 2.5–3.0 mm (3/32"–1/8").
    • Room/area tags: 4–5 mm (5/32"–3/16").
    • Titles/subtitles: 5–7 mm (3/16"–1/4").
    • Use Annotative styles to maintain these as “paper” heights across scales.
  • Tie styles to dimensions and leaders
    • In DIMSTYLE, set the Text Style to your TXT-Dims and control the actual height in DIMSTYLE (since Text Style height is 0).
    • In MLEADERSTYLE, set your TXT-Notes for leaders; match text height to your notes standard.
    • Keep a separate title style to avoid inadvertently bolding all notes.
  • Make Annotative work for you
    • Turn on ANNOAUTOSCALE = 1 so current scales are auto-added to annotative text.
    • Use OBJECTSCALE to add/remove scales to existing text.
    • Verify viewport results with a quick plot preview before publishing.
  • Template and enforcement
    • Store styles in your DWT; purge any stray “one-off” styles from production DWGs.
    • Use STANDARDS to enforce approved Text Styles across the team.
    • MATCHPROP or SELECTSIMILAR can quickly realign legacy text to your standard styles.
  • Fonts, plotting, and portability
    • TrueType fonts are not embedded in DWG; package fonts with eTransmit for sharing.
    • Use acad.fmp to map missing fonts to approved substitutes in received files.
    • Test legibility at scale with your CTB/STB plot styles before freezing standards.
  • Pro tips
    • Apply Background Mask in MTEXT for clarity over hatches and dense linework.
    • Keep the “Standard” style unchanged; build new styles for everything else.
    • Limit your palette: fewer styles = fewer errors and faster reviews.
