Bluebeam Tip: Creating Custom Measurement Systems in Bluebeam Revu for Enhanced Precision

Accurate measurements in Bluebeam Revu depend on setting the correct scale for your drawing. Revu includes several common architectural and engineering scales, but it also allows you to create custom scales, calibrate drawings using a known dimension, and save frequently used scales as presets.

Whether you are reviewing construction drawings, preparing quantity takeoffs, or working with PDFs that have been resized, setting and verifying the scale before taking measurements helps ensure reliable results.

How to Set a Custom Page Scale

If you know the scale of your drawing, you can enter it directly:

  1. Open the PDF in Bluebeam Revu.
  2. Go to Tools > Measure > Set Scale. You can also click Scale Not Set or the current scale in the lower-right corner of the Revu workspace.
  3. Choose the pages to which you want to apply the scale.
  4. Select Custom.
  5. Enter the relationship between a distance on the drawing and its corresponding real-world distance. For example, you might specify that one inch on the drawing represents ten feet in the real world.
  6. Select the appropriate unit of measurement for each side of the scale equation. The units do not need to match and can come from different measurement systems.
  7. Choose the desired measurement precision.
  8. Optionally, select + Add Preset to save the custom scale for future use.
  9. Select Apply Scale.

How to Calibrate a Drawing

Even when a drawing indicates its intended scale, the PDF may have been resized during printing, scanning, or export. When possible, calibrating the drawing against a known dimension is the most reliable approach.

  1. Open the Measurements panel by going to Window > Panels > Measurements.
  2. Select Calibrate. You can also go to Tools > Measure > Set Scale, select Custom, and then select Calibrate.
  3. Locate a dimension on the drawing whose real-world length is known.
  4. Click the two endpoints of that dimension. Holding Shift can help you draw a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal calibration line.
  5. Enter the known real-world length and select its unit of measurement.
  6. Choose the pages to which the calibrated scale should apply.
  7. Select the desired measurement precision.
  8. Optionally, select + Add Preset to save the calibrated scale.
  9. Select Apply Scale.

Tip: For vector-based PDFs, enable Snap to Content to position the calibration points more precisely on the drawing geometry.

Using Different Measurement Units

Starting with Revu 20, measurement units are not necessarily tied to the units used for the page scale. For example, a drawing can be scaled using feet and inches while an individual length measurement is displayed in meters.

To change the units displayed for a measurement:

  1. Select the measurement markup on the PDF.
  2. Locate the Units setting in the Properties toolbar or Measurements panel.
  3. Select one of Revu’s available units for that measurement type.

The change applies only to the selected measurement. To use the same configuration for future measurements of that type, open the Properties panel and select Set as Default.

Saving a Measurement Tool to the Tool Chest

If you regularly use the same measurement appearance, units, labels, and other properties, you can save the configured markup to the Tool Chest:

  1. Create a measurement markup and configure its properties.
  2. Right-click the markup.
  3. Select Add to Tool Chest.
  4. Choose the tool set where you want to save it.

The saved tool can then be reused without reconfiguring its properties each time. Tool sets can also be exported and shared with other Revu users to help standardize measurement workflows across a team.

Applying Different Scales to One Drawing

Some PDF pages contain details, plans, and sections drawn at different scales. In these cases, use Viewports to define separate areas of the page with their own scales.

  1. Open the Measurements panel.
  2. In the Viewports section, select Add Viewport.
  3. Draw a rectangle around the area that requires a separate scale.
  4. Give the viewport a descriptive name.
  5. Set or calibrate its scale.
  6. Select Apply.

Measurements placed inside the viewport will use its scale instead of the general page scale.

Measurement Best Practices

  • Set or verify the scale first: Do this before placing measurement markups.
  • Calibrate when possible: Calibration can identify resizing or scaling errors introduced during PDF creation.
  • Check for existing viewports: An unexpected viewport can cause measurements in part of a page to use a different scale.
  • Use Snap to Content: This can improve accuracy when working with vector-based drawings.
  • Apply scales carefully: Confirm whether the scale should affect the current page, selected pages, a custom page range, or the entire document.
  • Save frequently used scales: Custom and calibrated scales can be added to the preset list for future use.
