ZBrush Tip: ZBrush Joint Masking for Controlled Pose Deformation

A well-designed joint mask creates a controlled transition between fixed and moving geometry, preventing elbows, knees, shoulders, and fingers from bending like rigid tubes. In ZBrush, available from NOVEDGE, the key is to use a soft mask gradient rather than a hard boundary.

Before posing, move to a lower subdivision level. Large transformations are easier to manage on simpler geometry, while higher subdivision levels preserve the sculpted details that follow the deformation.

  • Identify the pivot: Locate the anatomical center of rotation. For an elbow, this is near the hinge between the upper and lower arm—not simply the center of the visible joint volume.
  • Mask the stationary area: Use MaskPen or MaskLasso to protect the portion that should remain fixed. Remember that darkened geometry is protected, while unmasked geometry can be transformed.
  • Create a transition zone: Hold Ctrl and click the masked area to blur the mask. A gradual falloff distributes deformation across several edge loops and reduces pinching.
  • Sharpen only when necessary: Hold Ctrl and Alt, then click the mask to sharpen it. A slightly firmer transition can help mechanical hinges, armor plates, or stylized joints.

Activate Gizmo 3D and place its pivot at the joint’s natural rotation point. Use Alt-drag while repositioning the Gizmo so that the mesh does not move. Rotate the unmasked limb in small increments, checking the silhouette from front, side, and three-quarter views. One large rotation often produces more distortion than several controlled adjustments.

For organic characters, avoid masking exactly at the elbow or knee crease. Extend the mask gradient beyond the joint so surrounding muscle and fatty tissue participate in the bend. Shoulders and hips require an even broader transition because they rotate through multiple axes and affect nearby torso forms.

  • Use a narrow gradient for fingers, toes, and mechanical joints.
  • Use a medium gradient for elbows, knees, and wrists.
  • Use a broad gradient for shoulders, hips, necks, and the spine.
  • Temporarily enable PolyFrame to confirm that the transition crosses enough topology.

When posing a model with many SubTools, use Transpose Master to create a temporary combined posing mesh. Apply the joint masks and transformations there, then transfer the pose back to the original SubTools. Save a separate project before the transfer so the neutral pose remains recoverable.

After each bend, clear the mask and inspect the compressed and stretched sides of the joint. Use Move to restore the silhouette, Smooth sparingly to relax bunching, and ClayBuildup or Standard to rebuild compressed anatomy. Do not attempt to solve every deformation with the mask alone; masking establishes the motion, while corrective sculpting restores believable volume.
