Revit Tip: Using Halftone to Establish Visual Hierarchy in Revit

Halftone display is a simple but powerful Revit graphic control for making secondary information recede while keeping the active design scope easy to read.

In Revit, halftone does not change an element’s actual material, lineweight, or model data. It applies a lighter graphic appearance in the current view, helping users distinguish between primary content and contextual references. Used consistently, it produces clearer coordination views, construction documents, and presentation-ready sheets.

Use halftone to establish visual hierarchy

A drawing should immediately communicate what is important. For example, in a demolition plan, existing construction may need to remain visible without competing with demolition graphics. In a coordination plan, an architectural link may provide essential context, while the MEP or structural elements being reviewed must remain visually dominant.

  • Existing versus new work: Halftone existing elements so proposed work is more readable.
  • Linked models: Display linked architectural, structural, or MEP models in halftone when they are reference information.
  • Underlays: Use halftone for the level shown as an underlay, especially in ceiling plans and multi-level coordination views.
  • Background categories: Halftone grids, reference planes, furniture, entourage, or other categories that should not dominate a documentation view.
  • Design option comparisons: Reduce the visual weight of an inactive option or supporting context where appropriate.

Where to control halftone

For broad view-based control, open Visibility/Graphics Overrides using VG or VV. In the relevant category, Revit Links, Filters, or Worksets tab, enable the Halftone option. This is usually the best method when the same type of content should appear lighter throughout a view.

For more precise control, create a view filter. A parameter-based filter can target only the elements that meet a defined rule, such as “Existing,” a certain workset, a particular system classification, or a custom parameter value. Apply a halftone override through the filter instead of manually overriding individual elements. This keeps the view intelligent and reduces maintenance as the model evolves.

If an element needs a one-off treatment, select it and use Override Graphics in View > By Element. Use this sparingly. Element overrides can be difficult for other team members to discover and may create inconsistency between otherwise similar views.

Make the setting repeatable

The most reliable workflow is to build halftone rules into a view template. A coordination plan template, for instance, can automatically halftone selected Revit links, underlays, and background categories. When the template is assigned to new views, the graphic standard is preserved without repeated setup.

  • Create separate templates for plans, reflected ceiling plans, sections, and coordination 3D views.
  • Name filters clearly, such as FILTER – Existing – Halftone.
  • Keep link display settings consistent across disciplines.
  • Test the view in both color and grayscale before publishing.

Remember that halftone is different from transparency. Halftone lightens linework and patterns; transparency allows objects behind an element to be seen. In many cases, halftone is preferable because it retains legibility in printed drawings. Excessive transparency can make overlapping geometry harder to interpret.

Before issuing sheets, review the output in a PDF or printed test. Halftone intensity can appear different depending on printer settings, PDF viewers, lineweights, and whether the sheet is printed in color, grayscale, or black-and-white. Adjust the project’s Halftone/Underlay settings when needed, but avoid making contextual elements so faint that they lose coordination value.
