When sculpting thin geometry—such as clothing, leaves, ears, wings, armor plates, or open shells—a brush stroke can accidentally deform the opposite side. ZBrush’s BackfaceMask option prevents this by restricting the brush’s influence to polygons facing the camera.
Enable it from Brush > Auto Masking > BackfaceMask. Once activated, sculpting and painting strokes are blocked from affecting back-facing polygons, even when the brush radius extends through the entire surface.
- Use it for thin garments: Refine folds on the front of a shirt, cape, or sleeve without pushing or carving through the back.
- Protect delicate anatomy: Sculpt eyelids, nostrils, lips, and ear rims while reducing unwanted changes on nearby opposing surfaces.
- Control hard-surface panels: Add bevels, scratches, or panel details to one side of a thin mechanical component without damaging its underside.
- Improve Polypaint accuracy: When supported by the active brush, BackfaceMask helps keep color strokes from passing through thin geometry.
- Preserve silhouettes: Surface detailing can be applied without unintentionally altering the far side and changing the model’s profile.
A reliable workflow is to activate BackfaceMask before beginning localized refinement:
- Select the sculpting or painting brush you intend to use.
- Open Brush > Auto Masking and enable BackfaceMask.
- Rotate the model so the target surface faces the camera as directly as possible.
- Begin with a low Z Intensity and test the stroke in an inconspicuous area.
- Rotate the model afterward and inspect the reverse surface for unexpected deformation.
Remember that BackfaceMask evaluates polygon orientation relative to the current view. At very shallow viewing angles, some polygons may be treated differently than expected. For the cleanest result, work from a more direct camera angle and rotate the model frequently rather than attempting every stroke from one position.
BackfaceMask is a brush-specific setting. Switching brushes may therefore disable it if the newly selected brush has different Auto Masking settings. If it is essential to your workflow, configure the brush and save it as a custom preset with Brush > Save As. A clearly named preset such as “ClayBuildup_ThinSurface” makes the setting easy to identify later.
Do not treat BackfaceMask as a substitute for suitable topology. Extremely low-resolution or intersecting surfaces can still produce irregular results. Subdivide the mesh when necessary, verify surface normals, and combine BackfaceMask with ordinary masks or Polygroups when an area requires stricter isolation.
For comparison, try a large Move or ClayBuildup stroke on a thin test mesh with BackfaceMask turned off, undo it, enable the option, and repeat the stroke. The difference is immediate and demonstrates why this small setting is valuable for controlled production sculpting.
