Bluebeam Tip: Bluebeam Revu PDF Overlay for Faster Drawing Revision Comparison

Overlaying PDF revisions in Bluebeam Revu is one of the fastest ways to identify drawing changes between two plan sets. Unlike side-by-side comparison, an overlay combines selected pages into a new PDF and assigns each revision a distinct color. Areas that align appear in a blended color, while differences stand out immediately.

To create an overlay:

  • Open the relevant drawing set in Revu.
  • Go to Document > Overlay Pages.
  • Add the original and revised PDF files, then select the pages to compare.
  • Assign a different color to each document, such as red for the previous revision and green for the current revision.
  • Choose an output location and create the overlay PDF.

For the most reliable result, verify that both sheets use the same page size, orientation, and drawing origin before creating the overlay. If the sheets have shifted slightly due to different title block positions, use Revu’s alignment options or select matching reference points to register the pages correctly.

When reviewing the output, look for color-separated linework, relocated notes, revised dimensions, or changes to walls, equipment, and symbols. Matching content typically blends into a third color or appears substantially darker, making unchanged information easier to distinguish from actual revisions.

  • Overlay architectural, structural, and MEP revisions separately to keep review focused.
  • Name the resulting PDF with both revision identifiers, such as A101_R1-vs-R2_Overlay.
  • Add clouds, callouts, or status-marked annotations to confirmed changes for team follow-up.
  • Use the Markups List to document change impacts and export a summary for coordination meetings.

Overlay Pages is especially valuable before issuing RFIs, approving change work, or starting quantity takeoffs. It helps reviewers focus on what changed instead of manually scanning every sheet.
