Auto Groups is one of the fastest ways to organize a ZBrush mesh containing multiple disconnected pieces. Instead of manually masking and assigning each element, ZBrush can identify every separate polygon island and give it a unique Polygroup in a single operation.
With the model active in Edit mode, open Tool > Polygroups and click Auto Groups. ZBrush analyzes connectivity: polygons that share welded vertices remain together, while disconnected elements receive different Polygroup colors. Press Shift+F to display PolyFrame and inspect the result.
Auto Groups works according to topology, not visual proximity. Two surfaces may appear to touch while remaining disconnected, so they will receive different groups. Conversely, parts connected by even a narrow strip of polygons are treated as one island. If components that should be unified remain separate, inspect the connection and weld compatible points before repeating the command.
Be aware that Auto Groups replaces the current Polygroup arrangement with connectivity-based groups. If carefully designed groups already exist, duplicate the SubTool first or save a new project version. This small precaution prevents useful face, material, or deformation groupings from being lost.
A practical production sequence is:
For dense assemblies, Auto Groups can turn a difficult selection task into a few clicks. It is especially effective before ZModeler work, Boolean preparation, UV organization, and asset cleanup.
