Revit Tip: Mastering Revit View Range for Clearer Plan Documentation

View Range is one of the most important settings for producing reliable Revit plan views. When walls, doors, stairs, furniture, or overhead elements appear unexpectedly—or disappear entirely—the cause is often the view’s vertical visibility settings rather than the model itself.

In Revit, open a plan view and go to Properties > Extents > View Range > Edit. The View Range dialog defines the vertical slice of the building that the view can display. Understanding its four primary planes gives you much better control over drawings and documentation.

  • Top: The upper limit of the view range. Elements above this plane are normally not shown.
  • Cut Plane: The height at which Revit cuts through model elements. Walls, doors, windows, columns, and casework intersected by this plane display using their cut graphics.
  • Bottom: The lower boundary of the primary range. Elements between the Cut Plane and Bottom are usually shown in projection.
  • View Depth: An optional range below the Bottom plane. Items in this zone can display beyond the main view range, typically with an “Beyond” line style where applicable.

A practical example is a typical architectural floor plan. A Cut Plane around 4'-0" (1200 mm), depending on office standards and project requirements, often cuts through doors and windows at a useful height. However, do not treat this as a universal rule. Cabinetry, clerestory windows, low walls, specialized equipment, and structural elements may require a different cut height.

Use View Range deliberately to solve common documentation issues:

  • Doors are not showing as expected: Confirm that the Cut Plane intersects the door family geometry and that the family’s plan representation is set up correctly.
  • Low furniture or equipment is missing: Check whether it falls below the Bottom plane or whether its family visibility settings limit its plan display.
  • Overhead cabinets, beams, or soffits clutter the plan: Reduce the Top plane, use the Underlay setting appropriately, or control overhead items through Visibility/Graphics and filters.
  • Stairs display inconsistently: Review both View Range and the stair’s cut mark settings. Stair representation is particularly dependent on where the plan cuts the run.
  • Foundation or lower-level elements need to appear: Extend View Depth carefully instead of lowering the entire view range and creating unwanted graphics.

For localized exceptions, use a Plan Region. A Plan Region applies a separate View Range to a limited area within the plan. This is ideal when one portion of a floor has a split level, a sunken room, a raised platform, or a stair that needs a different cut condition. It is usually cleaner than changing the View Range for the entire view just to resolve one small area.

Consistency matters. Establish standard View Range values in your Revit template and apply them through View Templates. This prevents each user from adjusting plan views independently and helps ensure that similar drawing types—such as furniture plans, permit plans, demolition plans, and coordination plans—communicate information consistently.

Before changing model geometry to “fix” a visibility problem, inspect the view settings first: View Range, Discipline, Detail Level, Phase, Filters, Visibility/Graphics, and family visibility parameters. This troubleshooting order can save significant time and avoids unnecessary model edits.
