ZBrush Tip: UV Master Control Painting for Strategic Seam Placement

UV Master can generate clean UVs quickly, but an automatic unwrap may place seams across the face, hands, or other highly visible areas. Control Painting lets you protect these important regions and encourage seams to appear in less noticeable locations.

Prepare the model safely

  • Select the SubTool you want to unwrap.
  • Save an incremental project version before modifying UVs.
  • Open ZPlugin > UV Master and click Work on Clone. This creates a temporary low-resolution copy while preserving the original model’s subdivision levels, layers, and sculpted detail.
  • If the model is symmetrical, enable Symmetry in UV Master to create a more balanced layout. Leave it disabled for intentionally asymmetrical geometry.

Paint protected regions

Expand Control Painting and click Protect. Paint red over areas where UV seams should not appear. Prioritize regions that will receive close-up attention or require uninterrupted texture detail:

  • Faces, eyelids, lips, and other focal areas
  • Hands, fingers, and exposed skin
  • Logos, decals, embroidery, and graphic elements
  • Smooth surfaces where texture discontinuities would be obvious

Protection is best treated as guidance rather than an instruction to paint the entire model. UV Master still needs viable paths along which to open the surface. If too much geometry is protected, the resulting islands may become stretched, inefficient, or difficult to pack.

Guide seams toward hidden areas

Click Attract and paint blue where seams are preferable. Good candidates include the underside of arms, inner legs, back of the head, clothing joins, hard edges, or boundaries between materials. Use broad strokes to suggest practical routes instead of attempting to draw every seam with pixel-level precision.

Click Unwrap, then use CheckSeams to display the generated seam network directly on the model. Rotate the mesh and inspect all presentation angles. If a seam crosses a protected feature, return to Control Painting, strengthen the red protection, add a clearer blue route elsewhere, and unwrap again.

Validate the result

  • Use Flatten to inspect the UV islands.
  • Look for severe stretching, tiny fragmented shells, excessive empty space, and unnecessarily narrow islands.
  • Use UnFlatten before continuing; do not sculpt or edit the flattened clone.
  • When satisfied, click Copy UVs, select the original SubTool, and choose Paste UVs.

UVs can usually be transferred successfully when the clone and original retain compatible base-level topology. If topology changes after unwrapping, regenerate or transfer the UVs before proceeding with texture production.

Professional tip: combine seam protection with meaningful Polygroups when a model already has logical sections such as clothing panels, armor plates, or anatomical regions. Polygroups can establish the broad island structure, while Control Painting refines seam placement inside those boundaries.

Before painting production textures, apply a checker pattern and inspect the model at close range. Even well-hidden seams cannot compensate for heavily distorted UVs. A few short unwrap-and-review passes usually produce a cleaner result than accepting the first automatic layout.
