Use the BREAK command when you need to remove a precisely defined portion of an existing object without redrawing it. Unlike TRIM, which depends on cutting edges, BREAK lets you specify the two exact points that define the gap. It is especially valuable for architectural openings, piping gaps, electrical schematics, road centerlines, and detail drawings.
To break an object between two points, type BREAK at the Command line, then follow this efficient workflow:
AutoCAD removes the portion of the object between those two selected points, leaving two separate objects. Using the First point option is important: if you simply select an object by clicking it, the pick location can become the first break point. That can be useful for speed, but it can also produce an unintended gap when precision matters.
For reliable results, combine BREAK with Object Snaps. Endpoint, Midpoint, Intersection, Perpendicular, and Nearest snaps help ensure that the new ends land exactly where intended. For example, when showing a pipe interruption at a valve location, snap each break point to the appropriate valve connection point rather than estimating the distance visually.
BREAK works with many common object types, including lines, arcs, circles, ellipses, polylines, and splines. On an open object such as a line, the result is usually straightforward: AutoCAD deletes the segment between the two points. On a closed object, such as a circle or closed polyline, BREAK converts the object into an open object by removing the selected portion. This makes it a practical alternative to redrawing arcs or editing complex boundaries manually.
A useful variation is to use BREAK with the same first and second point. Instead of removing a visible segment, AutoCAD separates the object at one location. This is helpful when a single polyline must be divided for different layer assignments, linetypes, properties, or annotation purposes. It can also make later edits easier because each resulting segment can be selected independently.
For repetitive drafting, consider entering the command alias BR, if it is available in your AutoCAD environment. Keep Object Snap active and zoom into detailed geometry before choosing break points. Small inaccuracies are often difficult to see on screen but can create gaps, overlaps, or plotting issues later.
Before using BREAK, verify whether the object is part of a block, external reference, or associative feature. Edit the source definition or reference when necessary rather than breaking geometry that should remain coordinated. Also confirm the active layer: the resulting objects retain the original object properties, which supports consistent layer standards.
