ZBrush Tip: Transpose Action Line Setup for Precise Organic Posing

Transpose Action Lines provide a fast, visual way to move, rotate, or scale masked and unmasked portions of a model. Although Gizmo 3D is often the default transformation tool in current ZBrush workflows, the Transpose Line remains especially useful for organic posing, establishing joints, and making controlled transformations along a clearly defined axis.

To begin, enter Move, Scale, or Rotate mode, then switch from Gizmo 3D to the Transpose Line. Depending on your ZBrush version and interface configuration, the Y hotkey toggles between these transformation systems. Draw the line directly across the model to define the transformation axis.

A Transpose Action Line contains three primary control points:

  • Start circle: Establishes one end of the transformation axis and can act as a pivot reference.
  • Center circle: Provides central control for repositioning or manipulating the action line.
  • End circle: Defines the opposite end of the axis and controls the transformation’s direction and reach.

Line placement is critical. For a convincing elbow bend, draw the action line through the arm so its pivot is positioned near the elbow joint. Follow this practical workflow:

  1. Mask the portion of the model that should remain stationary.
  2. Blur the mask slightly if the transformation needs a soft, anatomical transition.
  3. Draw the action line along the structure’s principal axis.
  4. Switch to a perpendicular view and verify that the line passes through the form rather than floating above its surface.
  5. Perform the transformation from the appropriate action-line circle.
  6. Inspect the result from several angles before continuing.

The relationship between masking and action-line placement determines the quality of the result. A sharp mask creates a rigid boundary, making it suitable for mechanical parts or separated armor panels. A blurred mask distributes the transformation over a wider area, which is preferable for shoulders, hips, wrists, tails, and other flexible organic structures.

  • Hold Shift while drawing when you need the line to snap to a cleaner directional increment.
  • Draw on an unobstructed area of the mesh to avoid accidental placement errors.
  • Use Polyframe display to understand how the transformation affects topology and Polygroups.
  • Undo and redraw the line instead of compensating for a poorly positioned pivot.
  • Test large poses at a lower subdivision level, then inspect higher levels for stretching or surface artifacts.

For symmetrical posing, confirm that symmetry is enabled and that the action line follows the model’s intended local or global axis. For asymmetrical adjustments, disable symmetry and isolate the relevant SubTool or Polygroup to reduce selection mistakes.

The key habit is to treat the action line as a temporary rig bone: place it according to the underlying structure, not merely the visible silhouette. Accurate pivots produce cleaner arcs, more natural deformations, and fewer corrective sculpting passes.
