ZBrush Tip: Morph Brush Workflow for Precision Form Restoration

The Morph brush is a precision tool for restoring or pushing forms toward a stored state—perfect for fast, non-destructive corrective shapes after posing or heavy edits.

  • When to use it:
    • Fix mesh intersections and creases after posing or Transpose Master edits.
    • Restore clean planes and transitions softened by smoothing or polishing.
    • Dial in subtle asymmetry, eyelid and lip line adjustments, or muscle volume tweaks without re-sculpting.
  • Setup (the golden rule):
    • At the subdivision level you plan to correct, go to Tool > Morph Target > StoreMT.
    • Make your big edits (pose, proportion changes), then use the Morph brush to bring areas back—select Brush > Morph (B, M, O).
    • Use Tool > Morph Target > Switch to preview “before vs. after.”
  • Brush settings that just work:
    • ZIntensity: 10–25 for gentle feathered corrections; 40–60 for decisive snaps.
    • Focal Shift: -20 to -50 for controlled falloff.
    • Draw Size: small for creases/landmarks, larger for broad volumes.
    • Stroke: enable LazyMouse for steadier passes (Stroke > LazyMouse).
    • Brush > Auto Masking > BackfaceMask ON for thin surfaces and shells.
  • Practical strokes:
    • Default stroke “pulls back” toward the stored Morph Target, selectively undoing overworked areas.
    • Hold Alt to invert and push away from the morph target—useful to preserve primary forms while softening only the new edits.
    • For spot fixes, a short dab with a soft alpha can “patch-restore” micro areas cleanly.
  • Precision isolation with Mask By Morph:
    • Tool > Masking > Mask By Morph isolates either changed or unchanged regions.
    • Invert the mask to protect preserved forms while you reshape neighboring areas.
    • Combine with Grow/Shrink/Blur Mask to refine transitions.
  • Layer-based correctives:
    • Record corrections on a Layer for non-destructive blending and easy A/B toggles.
    • Name and group corrective layers (e.g., Corrective_Eyelid_L, Jawline_PoseA) for clean handoff.
  • Subdivision and hard-surface tips:
    • Work from lower subdivision levels to fix volumes, then step up to feather detail continuity.
    • For hard-surface, pair Morph with HPolish/Trim Dynamic to recover planar integrity without re-cutting edges.
  • Common pitfalls (and how to avoid them):
    • Any topology change (Dynamesh, Sculptris Pro, ZRemesher, Booleans) invalidates the Morph Target—StoreMT again afterward.
    • If nothing happens, confirm you have an active Morph Target and check ZAdd/ZSub orientation.
  • Pipeline note:
    • Author facial or pose correctives on Layers and export via FBX Export/Import with layers-as-blendshapes enabled for downstream DCCs/game engines.
