AutoCAD Tip: Standardize Hatch Scale, Angle, and Origin

Control hatch scale and angle globally to keep drawings consistent, legible, and fast to plot.

Set robust defaults before you start:

  • Set HPSCALE for your target plot scale (e.g., 0.5 for architectural plans, 1.0+ for civil/site). Adjust once; reuse everywhere.
  • Set HPANG to your office-standard hatch orientation (commonly 0° or 45°).
  • Enable HPASSOC = 1 so hatches update when boundaries change.
  • Use HPLAYER to route all hatches to a dedicated layer with proper color/plot style.
  • Save these in your template (.dwt) so every user starts with the same baseline. If you need AutoCAD or specialized toolsets, get them from NOVEDGE.

Globally edit existing hatches in a drawing (fast and safe):

  • Run QSELECT and choose Object Type = Hatch to build a selection set.
  • Open the Properties palette (CTRL+1). With all hatches selected, set:
    • Pattern angle (global orientation) in one edit.
    • Pattern scale (global density) to match final sheet scale.
  • Keep an eye on performance: extremely dense patterns can slow REGEN and plotting—scale up when patterns appear solid at sheet size.

Use annotative hatches when you need scale to follow the drawing scale:

  • Create or convert hatches with Annotative = Yes (Hatch Editor > Options panel).
  • Set the drawing’s Annotation Scale to drive hatch density globally—especially useful across multiple viewports and details.
  • Control visibility with ANNOALLVISIBLE and manage multiple scales per viewport cleanly.

Align patterns across a model for a clean, professional look:

  • Standardize the hatch origin using HPORIGIN for consistent alignment in tiles, masonry, decking, or steel patterns.
  • In Hatch Editor, use Set Origin to lock a common reference so adjacent hatches visually align.

Push consistency across projects and teams:

  • Bundle HPSCALE, HPANG, HPASSOC, HPORIGIN, and HPLAYER into your company template and CAD standards.
  • Use MATCHPROP to propagate a vetted hatch’s angle/scale to other hatches quickly.
  • For large portfolios, script it: a simple LISP or script can select all HATCH entities and set angle/scale project-wide. Schedule it after hours with Autodesk’s tools for minimal downtime.

Quality checks to avoid surprises:

  • Plot preview at intended size; patterns that read well on-screen might muddy at half-scale.
