V-Ray Tip: Using V-Ray Lens Effects for Controlled Bloom and Glare

V-Ray Lens Effects add a photographic finishing layer to a render by simulating how bright light interacts with a real camera lens. Used with restraint, bloom and glare can make emissive materials, sun reflections, windows, and practical lights feel more believable without requiring extensive post-production.

In the V-Ray Frame Buffer, enable the Lens Effects layer and begin with a clean, properly exposed image. Lens Effects enhance highlights; they should not be used to solve lighting, exposure, or material problems. If the source is excessively bright, the result will quickly look artificial.

  • Use bloom for soft light spill. Bloom creates a diffuse halo around bright pixels. It is particularly effective for daylight passing through windows, illuminated signage, LEDs, polished metal highlights, and subtle atmospheric softness.
  • Use glare for visible diffraction streaks. Glare produces star-shaped rays or streaks that suit headlights, streetlights, sun glints, and small intense fixtures. Keep it more selective than bloom, especially in architectural imagery.
  • Set the threshold deliberately. The threshold determines which pixels create the effect. A lower value affects more of the image and can wash out contrast; a higher value limits the effect to the strongest highlights. Start high, then lower it only until the intended light sources begin to respond.
  • Match the effect to the image scale. Large bloom sizes may feel cinematic in a wide exterior but can make a close product render look foggy. At final output resolution, inspect the image at 100%; effects that look subtle in a reduced preview may be excessive when viewed full size.

A reliable workflow is to establish lighting and exposure first, then add bloom at a low intensity. Once the bloom feels natural, introduce a small amount of glare only where the scene calls for it. For example, a daytime interior may need a restrained window glow, while a night-time urban visualization can support controlled glare from streetlights and vehicle lamps.

  • Protect important detail. Watch bright edges around glazing, chrome, white furniture, and emissive objects. Excessive bloom can soften material definition and hide carefully modeled details.
  • Consider the camera story. A pristine product shot may require almost no lens effect, whereas an editorial, night, or cinematic composition may benefit from a more expressive treatment. The effect should support the visual intent rather than become the subject.
  • Keep color believable. Colored glare can be useful for stylized visuals, but neutral or subtly warm bloom is usually safer for photorealistic architectural and product work.
  • Save it as a VFB layer. Because Lens Effects are applied in the V-Ray Frame Buffer, you can toggle, refine, and compare settings non-destructively. Save the image with its VFB layers or keep a preset for consistent results across a series.

Lens Effects are also valuable during look development: they reveal whether practical lights are bright enough to read as luminous and whether highlight placement supports the composition. However, evaluate the raw beauty render too. A strong image should still work before finishing effects are enabled.
