ZBrush Tip: Mirror and Weld: Restore Symmetry and Seal the Center Seam

When symmetry drifts or you’ve only sculpted one half, Mirror and Weld quickly restores a clean, watertight counterpart.

  • Duplicate your SubTool first (Tool > SubTool > Duplicate) to keep a safe original.
  • Go to the lowest subdivision level. If you must keep higher levels, use Geometry > Freeze Subdivision Levels before proceeding.
  • Center the model on the world axis so the symmetry plane is meaningful:
    • Deformation > Unify to recenter and normalize scale, or
    • Manually set Tool > Geometry > Position X to 0 if your seam should live on X=0.
  • Decide which side is the “source.” By default, Mirror And Weld copies from negative X to positive X. If your detail lives on +X, run Deformation > Mirror (X) first to flip it to −X.
  • Run Tool > Geometry > Modify Topology > Mirror And Weld. Use the X axis for most cases; in newer versions you can switch to Y or Z when needed.
  • If you see a gap or double edge at the seam, slightly increase the weld tolerance (Weld Distance) and repeat Mirror And Weld.
  • Unfreeze subdivision levels (if used) and, when necessary, Project All from the backup SubTool to recover any micro detail.

Why this works:

  • It guarantees vertex order and topology alignment across the centerline, preventing tiny mismatches common with soft symmetry fixes.
  • It welds the seam for watertight meshes—critical before Boolean operations, remeshing, or exporting to other DCCs.

Common pitfalls and fixes:

  • My sculpt disappears or the empty side overwrites the detailed side:
    • Your detail is likely on +X. Run Deformation > Mirror (X) to move it to −X, then Mirror And Weld.
  • The center seam isn’t on X=0:
    • Local Symmetry won’t affect Mirror And Weld. Recenter with Deformation > Unify or nudge the mesh with Deformation > Offset to align the intended seam to X=0.
  • Visible split or holes after welding:
    • Raise the weld tolerance slightly, ensure no masked points at the seam, and try again. For hard-surface, follow with Polish By Features to crisp up the centerline.
  • I only need to re-sync positions, not topology:
    • Try Tool > Deformation > Smart Resym at the lowest subdivision to restore symmetry without changing topology.

Production tips:

  • Keep polygroups clean before mirroring; clear group borders at the seam reduce stray verts that resist welding.
  • For asymmetrical accessories, split them to separate SubTools before Mirror And Weld. Reattach or instance after.
  • After welding, ZRemesher with KeepGroups can yield even quads that respect your new symmetry.
  • Bind a hotkey to Mirror And Weld for rapid iteration during blockout.
