ZBrush Tip: Establish a Consistent ZBrush SubTool Naming Convention

Clear SubTool names turn a complex ZBrush project into a navigable production file. Instead of leaving entries such as PM3D_Sphere3D_7 or Extract12, rename each component as soon as its purpose becomes clear. This small habit speeds up sculpting, revisions, posing, Boolean work, exporting, and collaboration.

To rename a SubTool, select it in the Tool > SubTool palette, click Rename, enter a descriptive name, and confirm. Use names that remain meaningful when viewed outside the immediate context of the sculpt.

  • Name by function: Use labels such as Head, Torso, Left_Glove, Belt_Buckle, or Helmet_Visor.
  • Add location: Prefix paired or repeated parts with L_ and R_, or use complete words if the project will be shared.
  • Identify construction roles: Mark Boolean parts as BOOL_Cutter, BOOL_Union, or BOOL_Intersect.
  • Record status: Suffixes such as _WIP, _Approved, _Retopo, and _Export make production stages immediately visible.
  • Use sortable prefixes: Numbering major groups—01_Body, 02_Clothing, 03_Armor—helps preserve a predictable visual order.

Keep names concise. A useful SubTool name identifies the object, side, purpose, and state without becoming a sentence. For example, L_ShoulderPad_BOOL_WIP communicates more than ShoulderPieceNewFinal2. Avoid vague terms such as “new,” “copy,” or “final,” especially when repeated. If multiple versions are necessary, use controlled numbering: Helmet_v01, Helmet_v02, and Helmet_v03.

Renaming is particularly valuable before performing operations that generate additional geometry. Duplicate, Extract, Split, Boolean, and remeshing workflows can quickly fill the SubTool list with default names. Rename the source first, then label each result immediately. This reduces the chance of sculpting on, deleting, or exporting the wrong mesh.

  • Rename mirrored parts after confirming their orientation.
  • Label hidden backup meshes with a consistent BACKUP_ prefix.
  • Distinguish high- and low-resolution meshes with _HIGH and _LOW.
  • Identify meshes intended for export with format or destination tags, such as _STL or _GAME.
  • Review names before saving a milestone or sending the project to another artist.

For larger projects, combine naming with SubTool folders. A folder called Armor can contain clearly named components such as ChestPlate, L_Pauldron, and R_Pauldron. Folder organization controls visibility at a broad level, while precise SubTool names make individual selection reliable.

As a final check, temporarily collapse folders and scan the list. If every visible name communicates what the part is and why it exists, the file is ready for efficient revision or handoff.
