V-Ray Sun can create convincing interior daylight quickly, but the key is to treat it as part of a complete daylight system—not as a standalone light source. A well-positioned sun, an appropriate sky environment, controlled exposure, and physically plausible openings work together to produce bright, natural, and balanced interior renders.
For V-Ray software, begin with a real-world approach: sunlight is extremely powerful outdoors, while interior illumination is mostly the result of indirect bounces from the sky, exterior ground, and surrounding surfaces.
Exposure is often the most important control. Since V-Ray Sun is based on physically plausible lighting behavior, reducing its intensity just to brighten an interior can make exterior views look unnatural. Instead, adjust the V-Ray Physical Camera or V-Ray Frame Buffer exposure controls.
Material response has a major effect on daylight quality. Interior walls, ceilings, and floors are light-reflecting surfaces that distribute illumination throughout the room. A slightly off-white wall with realistic roughness will bounce light more naturally than a pure white material or a very dark, glossy finish. Keep diffuse colors physically reasonable: pure white surfaces can contribute to blown highlights, while overly saturated materials can introduce unwanted color bleeding.
For deeper rooms, consider the architectural solution before adding artificial fill lights. Skylights, larger openings, brighter exterior ground, or reflective interior finishes may be more appropriate. If artistic fill is necessary, use subtle V-Ray lights and place them deliberately. A hidden area light can help lift an excessively dark corner, but it should support—not replace—the daylight logic established by the sun and sky.
Use V-Ray Light Mix to explore alternatives after rendering. Separating the V-Ray Sun, sky, and added interior lights gives you the flexibility to fine-tune their relative contribution in the V-Ray Frame Buffer without repeatedly rebuilding the lighting setup. This is especially useful when comparing design options or preparing client presentations.
Finally, test daylight at the actual camera view and final output resolution. A setting that works in a wide shot may produce distracting glare, hard shadows, or noise in a close-up. Render small iterations first, verify the balance between exterior and interior values, then increase sampling quality for the final image.
