ZBrush Tip: DynaMesh Workflow: Fast Blockouts and Remesh Best Practices

DynaMesh is your fastest path from a blank canvas to a convincing base form, letting you explore proportions and silhouettes without worrying about stretched topology.

  • Continuously redistributes polygons as you sculpt, so you can pull, cut, and merge without topology artifacts.
  • Ideal for early design, kitbashing, and quick boolean-style operations.
  • Pairs well with ZRemesher later for clean, animation-friendly topology.

Quick setup

  • Start from a primitive or a sphere, then press Make PolyMesh3D.
  • Activate Tool > Geometry > DynaMesh. Begin with Resolution ~64–128 for broad forms.
  • Hold Ctrl and drag on empty canvas to re-DynaMesh (rebuild topology) whenever the surface stretches.
  • Use InsertMesh brushes; hold Alt while inserting to mark as a negative volume, then Ctrl+drag to subtract.
  • Enable Groups if you want DynaMesh to respect polygroups when remeshing.

Resolution and scale tips

  • DynaMesh Resolution is relative to your model’s size. If you need more detail at the same numeric value, scale the model up with Gizmo 3D and re-DynaMesh.

  • Use TrimDynamic, HPolish, and Clip/Trim brushes to establish crisp planes on a DynaMesh base.

  • Toggle Polish in DynaMesh for slight edge clean-up; keep it low to avoid rounding.

Organic blockouts

  • ClayBuildup for massing, Move for silhouette, and Dam_Standard for early landmarks.
  • When details soften after remesh, raise Resolution incrementally and keep iterating.

Boolean and welding workflow

  • Merge temporary parts and run a remesh pass to weld intersections before refinement.
  • For complex assemblies, consider Live Boolean for previews, then convert to a single mesh and DynaMesh for cleanup.

Best practices

  • Save iterations frequently (Incremental Saves) while experimenting.
  • Keep separate subtools for components you may want to adjust independently.
  • Before moving into fine detail, turn DynaMesh off, ZRemesh for clean flow, subdivide, and optionally Project All to recover forms.

Common pitfalls and fixes

  • Jagged edges after remesh: increase Resolution slightly or use Polish By Features.
  • Thin parts collapsing: add thickness first (Inflate/Deformation > Inflate), then re-DynaMesh.
