Brushed metal is defined by directional micro-scratches that stretch and soften reflections along a consistent grain. In V-Ray, the key is not simply making a metal surface rough; it is controlling the direction of its reflections with anisotropy.
Start with a V-Ray Material and establish a physically plausible metal base. For stainless steel, aluminum, or brushed brass, use metalness if your V-Ray workflow supports it, or set the reflection color appropriately for a traditional shader workflow. The surface should be highly reflective, but never mirror-perfect.
Enable anisotropy in the material’s reflection controls. An anisotropy value near zero produces isotropic reflections: the blur spreads evenly in every direction. Increasing the value elongates highlights and reflections along one axis, creating the recognizable linear finish of brushed metal. The exact numeric range varies by V-Ray host application and shader version, but subtle settings are usually more convincing than extreme ones.
The most important control is the anisotropy rotation. It determines the direction of the brushed grain. A perfect material can look incorrect immediately if its grain runs across a surface where the manufacturing process would have brushed it lengthwise.
Use a subtle directional texture to break up the uniformity. A stretched Noise, Cellular, or scratch map can drive roughness, anisotropy rotation, or bump. Keep bump intensity very low: brushed metal is usually a micro-surface effect, not deeply engraved geometry. Excessive bump produces unrealistic grooves, noisy reflections, and unnecessary render time.
For controlled results, map the texture in the object’s UV direction rather than relying on generic procedural coordinates. UVs allow the scratch pattern, roughness breakup, and anisotropy direction to remain aligned across multiple parts. This is especially valuable for cabinetry, elevator panels, fixtures, consumer products, and architectural hardware.
A practical workflow is to render a quick material test using a simple studio setup: a curved backdrop, one broad rectangular light, and one narrower rim light. Rotate the object or light while evaluating the render. If the highlights glide in one consistent direction and remain softly broken by fine variation, the material is working. If it reads as chrome, increase roughness slightly. If it reads as satin plastic, strengthen the metallic reflection response and verify that the environment contains something useful to reflect.
