Revit Tip: Modeling Coordinated Cable Tray Systems in Revit

Model cable trays as connected, coordinated systems rather than as isolated 3D geometry. In Revit, a well-built cable tray network improves routing clarity, supports more reliable documentation, and makes coordination with structure, ceilings, ducts, pipes, and equipment substantially easier.

Begin in an appropriate electrical plan or coordinated 3D view. Before placing tray, verify that the relevant levels, linked disciplines, and view settings are visible. This gives you the context needed to establish realistic elevations and avoid routing conflicts from the start.

  • Set the correct tray type first. In the Systems tab, select Cable Tray and choose a type that reflects the intended containment method, such as ladder tray, solid-bottom tray, or wire-mesh tray. Duplicate and rename types when needed instead of overwriting office-standard content.
  • Use dimensions that communicate design intent. Set the tray width and height in the Properties palette before routing. Consistent sizes make plan views, sections, schedules, and coordination reviews far easier to read.
  • Control elevation deliberately. Define the tray’s offset from its host level before drawing. Avoid visually placing trays in plan without confirming elevation; a route that appears clear in plan may clash with a duct, beam, or ceiling in 3D.

When routing, use Revit’s temporary dimensions, alignment tools, and orthogonal drawing behavior to create clean, intentional runs. Keep pathways parallel to building grids, corridors, and primary structural lines whenever practical. This produces a more organized model and reflects installation-friendly routing.

For changes in direction or elevation, allow Revit to create appropriate fittings when compatible routing preferences and tray content are available. Use elbows, tees, transitions, and vertical offsets intentionally. Do not rely on improvised detail lines or generic-model pieces to represent system components that should remain connected and schedulable.

  • Check connectivity. Tray segments and fittings should form a continuous physical pathway. Zoom into junctions and inspect connectors, especially after copying, splitting, or modifying runs.
  • Coordinate clearances in 3D. Use section boxes, discipline-specific visibility settings, and temporary hide/isolate to review tray routes around major MEP systems and structure.
  • Use offsets carefully. Separate power, data, life-safety, and control pathways according to the project requirements. Modeling distinct elevations can make segregation evident to the design team and installers.
  • Plan for access. Avoid routing tray where access panels, maintenance zones, sprinkler coverage, ceiling support, or equipment service clearances may be compromised.

View organization is equally important. Create dedicated electrical coordination views with filters or visibility overrides that distinguish cable trays from conduit, ductwork, piping, and structural elements. A strong color convention can quickly reveal systems, voltage classifications, or routing zones during coordination meetings. In documentation views, use view templates to ensure cable tray lineweights, detail levels, and visibility remain consistent across the project.

Schedules can turn modeled cable trays into useful project information. Include fields such as type, width, height, level, length, and comments. If your standards require it, add shared or project parameters for system designation, service, or installation notes. This supports quantity review and reduces the risk of undocumented design changes.

Finally, treat cable tray routing as a coordination process, not a one-time modeling task. Review the system after linked models update, after ceiling layouts change, and before issuing drawings. A brief clash review at key milestones is far less costly than resolving congestion in the field.
