ZBrush Tip: Convert 2.5D Pixols into Editable 3D Geometry

ZBrush’s 2.5D canvas stores pixols—pixels containing color, material, orientation, and depth—rather than editable polygons. To turn a 2.5D design into a sculptable 3D model, first capture its depth information as an alpha, then generate geometry from that alpha.

  1. Prepare a clean depth composition.
    • Arrange your 2.5D strokes and objects on the canvas.
    • Use contrasting depth levels so the major forms remain clearly separated.
    • Avoid extremely thin or noisy details at this stage; they can produce uneven polygons.
    • Save the document before continuing because canvas information is different from a saved 3D Tool.
  2. Capture the canvas as an alpha.

    Open the Alpha palette and use GrabDoc to capture the document’s depth as a grayscale alpha. White areas represent raised regions, black areas represent recessed regions, and gray values define intermediate depth.

  3. Inspect and refine the alpha.
    • Use Alpha > Modify controls to adjust contrast, blur harsh transitions, or invert the depth when necessary.
    • Apply a small amount of blur if the generated surface would otherwise contain stair-stepping or sharp pixel artifacts.
    • Keep the document resolution high enough to preserve the silhouette and important forms.
  4. Generate the 3D mesh.

    With the captured alpha selected, click Alpha > Make 3D. Adjust the available settings before generation:

    • MRes controls mesh resolution. Start moderately and increase it only when the alpha contains meaningful fine detail.
    • MDep determines the depth or thickness of the generated form.
    • MSm smooths the result and can reduce jagged transitions.
    • Double, when available, can help create a more enclosed form rather than a single relief surface.
  5. Convert and refine the result.

    The generated object appears as a new Tool. Select Tool > Make PolyMesh3D if it is not already a polygon mesh. You can then use ZRemesher, Dynamesh, subdivision, masking, and standard sculpting brushes to improve its topology and forms.

Important: dropping an editable 3D Tool onto the canvas exits Edit mode and converts that instance into pixols. You cannot recover its original topology directly from the canvas. Press Ctrl+N to clear unwanted canvas impressions, redraw the Tool, and immediately press T to enter Edit mode. Always save important models as ZTL or ZPR files before experimenting with 2.5D workflows.

This technique is especially effective for reliefs, medallions, embossed ornaments, terrain bases, decorative panels, and concept shapes. For deeper models, use the generated mesh as a starting surface rather than expecting a complete production-ready object.
