V-Ray Tip: V-Ray Shadow Catcher with Reflections — Production Setup

Shadow catcher with reflections is essential for integrating CG into plates while preserving contact shadows and believable glossy cues. Here’s a focused, production-ready setup you can adapt across DCCs.

Core principles

  • Create a ground object that matches the real surface in your backplate (scale and orientation matter).
  • Apply a shadow-catcher/matte workflow so the ground becomes invisible in the beauty pass but still receives shadows and reflections.
  • Drive lighting with a calibrated HDRI or dome light that matches your plate; use the VFB Background to align horizon and parallax.
  • Use a base reflective material under the matte wrapper to control reflection roughness and IOR.

3ds Max

  • Assign VRayMtlWrapper to the ground; plug a VRayMtl (your “base”) into it for reflection control.
  • Enable Matte surface; set Alpha contribution to -1.0.
  • Enable Shadows and Affect alpha. Tune Brightness or Color if the shadow needs to be lighter/warmer.
  • Leave Matte for refl/refr OFF to keep reflections visible. Set Receive GI ON, Generate GI OFF, and No GI on other mattes ON to avoid GI spill from the ground plane.

Maya

  • Use VRayMtlWrapper (or VRayObjectProperties with Matte overrides) on the ground geometry.
  • Matte surface ON, Alpha contribution -1, Shadows + Affect alpha ON.
  • Base VRayMtl defines reflection look (use realistic IOR ~1.5 for dielectrics; tune Roughness/Glossiness for blur).
  • Disable Matte for refl/refr to preserve visible reflections of your hero objects and environment.

SketchUp / Rhino

  • In the Asset Editor, create a Material Wrapper; enable Matte and set Alpha Contribution to -1.
  • Check Shadows and Affect Alpha. Plug your reflective base into the Wrapper’s Base slot.
  • Use the VFB to load the backplate and align the camera; confirm the plane disappears but shadows and reflections remain.

Cinema 4D (V-Ray 6+)

  • Use the Shadow Catcher material or a Material Wrapper workflow.
  • Enable Reflections for the shadow catcher and set Backplate/Environment compensation so reflections and shadow density match the plate.
  • Fine-tune Shadow Tint/Brightness for creative control without re-lighting.

Color management and compositing

  • Work in linear/ACEScg; ensure your backplate is correctly interpreted and previewed in the VFB.
  • Render Elements: Reflection, Shadow, Cryptomatte, Light Select. Grade Shadow as a multiply layer; adjust Reflection intensity in post for plate matching.
  • Keep Clamp output OFF during finals to retain highlight energy for realistic reflections; clamp only if fireflies persist after denoising.

Troubleshooting

  • Ground still visible: verify Matte surface ON and Alpha contribution -1.
  • Shadows too strong/weak: tune Shadow Brightness/Color or gain in the Shadow element.
  • Lost reflections: ensure Matte for refl/refr is OFF and the base material actually reflects (non-black reflection, sensible roughness).
  • Color bleed from ground: set Generate GI OFF and No GI on other mattes ON.
