Rhino 3D Tip: Streamline Rhino Editing with Selection Filters

Selection Filters are one of Rhino’s most practical tools for working quickly and safely in crowded models. Instead of carefully clicking around geometry or accidentally selecting unwanted objects, filters let you limit what Rhino can select before you begin an edit.

In complex files containing curves, surfaces, polysurfaces, annotations, lights, blocks, and reference geometry, this small control can save considerable time. It is especially useful when objects overlap in a viewport or when a model includes construction geometry that should not be modified.

To open the controls, use the Selection Filter panel or run the SelectionFilter command. Enable only the object categories you intend to work with, then make your selection normally using clicks, window selections, crossing windows, or selection commands.

  • Select only curves: Turn on Curves and disable other object types before trimming, joining, rebuilding, or moving 2D construction geometry.
  • Edit surfaces without grabbing edges: Enable Surfaces or Polysurfaces when selecting product-modeling geometry in dense wireframe views.
  • Protect annotations: Disable Text, Dimensions, Hatches, and Leader objects before making broad selections in documentation views.
  • Work safely with reference content: Restrict selection to the geometry you are actively editing while keeping imported CAD, image references, or layout elements visible.
  • Control block selection: Use the Block instances filter when a model contains repeated furniture, hardware, entourage, or assembly components.

A strong workflow is to set the filter before using a large window or crossing selection. For example, if you need to move every curve in a façade drawing but leave dimensions and hatch patterns untouched, activate only the curve filter. You can then draw a crossing window across the area confidently, without spending time deselecting annotation afterward.

Selection Filters are also valuable during cleanup. Suppose you receive a consultant’s file containing curves, points, meshes, and blocks. By enabling one category at a time, you can inspect and organize each type systematically. Combine this approach with commands such as SelDup, SelBadObjects, SelOpenPolysrf, and SelLayer to isolate potential issues without disturbing the rest of the model.

Keep these practical habits in mind:

  • Reset the filter when changing tasks. A forgotten active filter can make objects appear impossible to select.
  • Use filters alongside layers, not instead of layers. Layers organize the model; filters control the current selection behavior.
  • For sub-object work, use Ctrl+Shift on Windows or Command+Shift on Mac to select faces, edges, or vertices as needed; object-type filters still help reduce surrounding selection clutter.
  • Consider docking the Selection Filter panel where it remains visible in your regular Rhino workspace.
