V-Ray Tip: Preventing Denoise Artifacts in V-Ray with Proper AOVs

Denoising speeds delivery but can smear detail or break compositing if AOVs aren’t planned correctly. Here’s how to guard against artifacts in V-Ray with the right passes and workflow.

Set up the right AOVs

  • Add VRayDenoiser as a render element and pick the engine that suits your hardware: Intel Open Image Denoise (CPU) or NVIDIA AI Denoiser/OptiX (GPU/RTX).
  • Enable denoising only for beauty-related elements you intend to grade, such as Lighting, GI, Reflection, Refraction, Specular, Emission, and additive Light Select passes.
  • Keep utility and mask passes un-denoised to preserve crisp edges and accurate selections: Cryptomatte, MultiMatte/ID, Z-Depth, Normals, Position/World Pass, Velocity/Motion Vector, Object/Material ID.
  • Include helper AOVs that stabilize denoising and aid troubleshooting: Diffuse Filter (Albedo) and Normals. These guide the denoiser and help reveal where detail may be lost.

When to denoise (and when not to)

  • Denoise the Beauty pass for look-dev and finals; avoid denoising masks or IDs to prevent edge bleeding and matte fringing.
  • If you reconstruct Beauty in comp, denoise Raw components (e.g., RawLighting, RawGI) before re-multiplying with an un-denoised Albedo/Diffuse Filter to avoid color shifts.
  • For Light Select workflows, prefer denoising the combined light contribution (where additive) rather than each light individually to minimize mismatch on re-sum.
  • Use NVIDIA AI Denoiser for rapid IPR feedback; for finals, compare against V-Ray’s default or Intel OIDN for fewer hallucination artifacts on fine textures.

Sampling and data hygiene

  • Render to linear OpenEXR (16-bit half or 32-bit float). Avoid 8-bit outputs that exaggerate banding once denoised.
  • Avoid hard output clamping; use Max Ray Intensity to tame fireflies without crushing highlights the denoiser needs.
  • Give the denoiser enough signal: use a sensible Noise Threshold (about 0.005–0.01 for finals) and adequate max samples. Denoisers reduce residual noise; they don’t fix gross undersampling.
  • Pay extra attention to glossy highlights, glass, hair, and thin geometry; increase sampling where needed rather than relying solely on the denoiser.

Animation considerations

  • For sequences, use the Chaos Denoiser Standalone with temporal blending to reduce flicker and shimmering on low-contrast detail.
  • Use deterministic sampling (consistent noise seed) across frames to prevent noise crawling that denoisers may amplify.
  • Keep Velocity/Motion Vector and Z-Depth passes un-denoised for reliable vector blur and DOF in comp.

Practical checklist

  • Add VRayDenoiser and enable “Keep original” so you can A/B in the VFB and catch lost detail.
  • Denoise Beauty and lighting-related passes; exclude masks, IDs, and utility data.
  • Export linear EXRs and review at 100% for smearing on hair, micro-bump, decals, and caustics.
  • Iterate: relax Strength or switch engine if you see halos, blotches, or texture plasticity.
