V-Ray Tip: Layered Reflections for Realistic V-Ray Fabrics

Layered reflections are essential for believable textiles and fabrics in V-Ray. Here’s a practical way to build them quickly and keep renders clean.

  • Start with a physically sound base:
    • Use VRayMtl as your core shader. Keep Base Color (albedo) realistic; most fabrics sit below 0.8 brightness to avoid energy gain.
    • Set Reflection IOR around 1.35–1.55 and Roughness between 0.35–0.6 for woven or knit surfaces. This gives a broad, soft lobe that reads as fiber scatter.
    • Add a subtle normal/bump from micro-fiber or weave maps (2–5% bump strength) to break up specular uniformity.
  • Add Sheen for retroreflective fibers:
    • Enable the Sheen lobe in VRayMtl. Start with Weight 0.2–0.4 and tint to the fabric’s hue (slightly desaturated).
    • Increase Sheen Roughness for velvet/suede (0.6–0.9) and lower it for satin-like textiles (0.2–0.4).
    • Drive Sheen Weight with a weave or noise mask so it varies across threads and wear zones.
  • Optional Coat for finishes and satin:
    • Use the Coat lobe when the fabric has sizing, resin, or a light finish. Set Coat IOR ~1.4 and Roughness 0.1–0.25.
    • Keep Coat Weight modest (0.05–0.2). Too much turns cloth into plastic.
    • If available, use a separate coat normal map to align highlights with the fabric’s micro-directionality.
  • Shape highlights with directionality:
    • Use anisotropy (where supported) to align the base specular along warp/weft. Subtle values (0.2–0.4) go a long way.
    • Rotate the anisotropic orientation to match UVs or use a flow map for curved patterns.
    • For quick setups or imperfect UVs, try Triplanar on normals and masks to avoid visible seams.
  • Map-driven variation:
    • Use a fabric weave mask to modulate Sheen vs Base reflection. Brighter threads can carry more sheen; darker threads carry more diffuse.
    • Add subtle grunge or fuzz masks to reduce uniform sparkle on collars, elbows, and seams.
    • For colorways, VRayMultiSubTex (or equivalent) lets you swap thread colors across IDs without duplicating shaders.
  • Sampling and noise control:
    • Layered lobes increase variance. Keep Coat and Sheen roughness slightly higher to stabilize highlights.
    • Use Adaptive Image Sampler with a Noise Threshold around 0.02–0.04 for finals; relax it for lookdev.
    • Enable Clamp Output for tests to curb fireflies; refine small bright sources and avoid extreme HDR textures.
    • Use the V-Ray Denoiser conservatively; it should polish, not erase micro-detail.
  • Render elements and grading:
    • Split Reflection/Specular and use Material ID or Cryptomatte to isolate the fabric for targeted glare/contrast in comp.
    • Light Select elements help you tone down fabric sparkle from specific fixtures without re-rendering.
  • Quick presets by fabric type:
    • Velvet: Base roughness 0.6–0.8, high Sheen weight 0.4–0.6, very rough Sheen, minimal Coat.
    • Denim: Base roughness 0.45–0.6, Sheen 0.2–0.35, light anisotropy, pronounced weave normal.
    • Satin/Silk: Lower base roughness 0.25–0.4, Sheen 0.25–0.45, optional light Coat, noticeable anisotropy.
