Sunset lighting in V-Ray is most convincing when it is built around a clear relationship between the sun’s low angle, the atmosphere, and the camera exposure. Rather than relying on an extremely saturated environment color, use physically plausible lighting first, then refine the mood with controlled adjustments.
Start with a V-Ray Sun and Sky system. Position the sun close to the horizon to create long shadows and the characteristic grazing illumination that defines late-afternoon and sunset imagery. A low solar angle reveals texture beautifully on façades, terrain, vegetation, and rough materials because small surface variations catch the light.
For the warm color associated with sunset, adjust the sun and sky thoughtfully. A lower sun naturally travels through more atmosphere, shifting illumination toward warmer tones. Depending on your V-Ray host application and version, this can be enhanced with the sky model, atmospheric settings, or a subtle warm color temperature adjustment. Avoid pushing the sun color too far into orange; heavily saturated light can make neutral materials look artificial.
A practical approach is to preserve a warm key light while allowing the sky and shaded areas to remain comparatively cool. This warm-to-cool contrast is one of the most effective ways to create a cinematic sunset image. A V-Ray Dome Light loaded with a sunset HDRI can provide believable environmental reflections and fill light, while the V-Ray Sun remains the main directional source.
Atmosphere is equally important. Light haze, V-Ray Environment Fog, or aerial perspective can soften distant objects and create the layered depth commonly seen at sunset. Keep volumetric effects restrained: a small amount often adds scale and warmth, while too much can make the scene look smoky or reduce clarity.
In the V-Ray Frame Buffer, use exposure, white balance, and the Light Mix controls as finishing tools—not substitutes for good lighting. A slightly warm white balance can unify the result, but retain enough blue or neutral information in shadow areas to prevent a monochromatic orange render. Light Mix is especially useful for testing subtle changes to the sun, dome, interior practical lights, and accent lighting without re-rendering.
Finally, add practical lights selectively. Interior lamps, landscape fixtures, and emissive architectural details become more visible as daylight fades. Their warmer tones can reinforce the time of day, but their brightness should remain believable relative to the sunlit exterior.
