AutoCAD Tip: Master Associative Arrays for Efficient AutoCAD Design Revisions

The ARRAY command is one of AutoCAD’s most effective tools for repeating geometry accurately and consistently. Instead of copying objects one at a time, create an associative array that can be edited later as a single intelligent object. This is ideal for repeated components such as fasteners, seats, columns, ceiling fixtures, façade panels, parking stalls, and landscaping elements.

Start the command by typing ARRAY, select the source object or objects, and choose the array type that suits the design intent:

  • Rectangular arrays distribute objects in rows, columns, and levels.
  • Polar arrays repeat objects around a center point.
  • Path arrays place objects along a line, polyline, arc, spline, or other supported path.

For a rectangular array, focus first on the relationship between count and spacing. You can define the number of rows and columns, then enter the distance between them. Alternatively, specify the total array size and allow AutoCAD to calculate the spacing. This flexibility is useful when a repeated pattern must fit within a fixed overall dimension.

For example, when laying out structural columns, create one correctly sized column block, start a rectangular array, and set the required column count and bay spacing. If the structural grid changes later, select the array and adjust the values from the contextual Array Creation tab, grips, or the Properties palette. There is no need to erase and recreate every individual column.

Associativity is the key productivity benefit. An associative array remembers its source objects and array settings. When selected, it displays controls for modifying:

  • Item count in each direction
  • Row, column, or level spacing
  • Overall array extents
  • Rotation and orientation of repeated items
  • Base point and array direction
  • Individual item overrides

Use the Item option when one occurrence needs special treatment. You can move, rotate, replace, or delete a single array item without losing the rest of the pattern. This is especially helpful for layouts where one parking stall, desk, or fixture location must be omitted or adjusted for an obstruction.

For polar arrays, be deliberate about the center point and the fill angle. A full 360-degree array is useful for bolt circles, radial equipment layouts, and circular seating plans. A partial fill angle works better for features distributed along an arc. Review the Rotate Items setting as well: turn it on when objects should follow the radial direction, and turn it off when every object must retain the same orientation.

Path arrays require equal attention to object orientation. The Align Items option determines whether repeated objects rotate to follow the path. For example, fence posts or directional arrows may need to align with a curved path, while symbols placed along a corridor may need to remain horizontal.

Avoid exploding an array unless downstream editing truly requires separate objects. Exploding removes the intelligent relationship and makes future revisions slower and more error-prone. Keep arrays associative during design development, and use EXPLODE only when you are certain the pattern is final.
