Revit Tip: Strategic MEP Category Visibility Management in Revit

Complex coordination views can quickly become difficult to read when every mechanical, electrical, and plumbing category is visible at once. Strategically hiding MEP categories in Autodesk Revit helps teams focus on the information required for a specific task without deleting elements or affecting the model itself.

The key is to treat visibility as a view-management decision, not a modeling workaround. A structural coordination view, for example, may need ductwork and pipe mains visible but can hide diffusers, plumbing fixtures, cable trays, and device symbols. Conversely, an electrical plan may show lighting fixtures, conduits, and power devices while suppressing HVAC and plumbing systems that create unnecessary visual noise.

  • Start with Visibility/Graphics. In the active view, type VG or VV to open the Visibility/Graphics dialog. Under the Model Categories tab, expand categories such as Mechanical, Pipes, Ducts, Electrical Equipment, Cable Trays, and Conduits. Turn off only the categories that do not support the purpose of that view.
  • Use subcategories for finer control. Avoid hiding an entire category when only part of it is distracting. For instance, you may want ductwork visible but duct insulation hidden, or pipes visible while pipe centerlines are turned off. Expand category controls where available and review subcategory settings before applying broad changes.
  • Apply filters instead of category-wide hiding when needed. Filters are more precise when a view must show only a certain system, discipline, level, workset, phase, or parameter value. A filter can hide low-priority systems while keeping major distribution routes visible. It can also apply halftones or transparency rather than completely removing context.
  • Use view templates for consistency. Once a view has the right MEP visibility settings, save those settings in a view template. Apply the template to comparable floor plans, ceiling plans, sections, and 3D coordination views. This prevents individual users from creating inconsistent graphics across the drawing set.
  • Use temporary tools during active coordination. Temporary Hide/Isolate is ideal for investigating a congested area without changing the permanent view configuration. Use the sunglasses icon on the View Control Bar, isolate the relevant elements or categories, complete the review, and reset the temporary mode afterward.

When coordinating linked discipline models, visibility should be controlled deliberately at both the host and link levels. In VG, open the Revit Links tab and choose Custom display settings for a linked model. You can then control which categories are visible from that specific link. This is particularly useful when the host model needs only the linked duct mains and large equipment, not every fixture, fitting, tag, or annotation element.

For clarity, establish a small set of standardized coordination views, such as:

  • MEP Overall Coordination: Major ducts, pipes, trays, conduits, equipment, structural framing, and ceilings as transparent or halftone.
  • HVAC Coordination: Ducts, mechanical equipment, architectural ceilings, and structural elements; hide most plumbing and electrical categories.
  • Electrical Routing: Cable trays, conduits, electrical equipment, major duct and pipe routes as reference, with architectural backgrounds halftoned.
  • Issue Review View: Only the systems directly related to a clash, issue, or installation question.

Strategic hiding improves more than presentation quality. It reduces selection mistakes, speeds up visual reviews, and helps project teams identify real spatial conflicts instead of reacting to a crowded screen. Before hiding a category permanently in a template, confirm that it is not essential for downstream documentation, system verification, or coordination sign-off.
