Connecting MEP systems correctly in Revit is essential for producing coordinated models, reliable schedules, and usable engineering documentation. A visually connected duct, pipe, conduit, or cable tray is not necessarily part of a functional system; Revit must recognize the connector relationship and system classification.

Begin by confirming that the equipment, terminals, and fittings you are using contain compatible connectors. Each connector carries critical information, including:

  • Domain: HVAC, piping, electrical, cable tray, or conduit.
  • System classification: such as Supply Air, Sanitary, Domestic Cold Water, or Power.
  • Flow direction: In, Out, or Bidirectional.
  • Connector shape and size: round, rectangular, oval, or a specified pipe/conduit diameter.

When placing equipment families, verify connector settings before routing services. A supply diffuser, for example, must have an HVAC connector classified appropriately for the air system it serves. If the connector is incorrectly set to Return Air or has no system classification, Revit may prevent the connection or create an inaccurate system.

Use the Connect Into command when you need to join a component to an existing system. Select the unconnected device or terminal, choose Connect Into, and then select a duct, pipe, conduit, cable tray, or compatible system element. Revit will attempt to create the required connection and, where routing preferences permit, insert appropriate fittings automatically.

For a more controlled workflow, start routing directly from an open connector:

  • Select a piece of MEP equipment, fixture, terminal, or fitting.
  • Click an available connector and choose the relevant creation tool, such as Duct, Pipe, Conduit, or Cable Tray.
  • Set the system type before sketching the route.
  • Use the Options Bar to control offsets, diameter or width/height, slope, and justification.
  • Finish the route at another compatible connector rather than simply ending it near the target element.

After making connections, inspect the result in the System Browser. This is one of the fastest ways to identify whether Revit has recognized the intended network. Expand the relevant discipline and system type to review connected components, branches, equipment, and terminals. A component that does not appear where expected may be disconnected, assigned to the wrong system type, or using an incompatible connector.

Use system highlighting to perform a visual quality-control check. Select an element in the system and use the contextual tools to highlight the network. This makes disconnected branches, unintended connections, and incorrectly assigned elements easier to spot in dense coordination views.

Pay special attention to these common issues:

  • Elements touch but do not connect: Zoom in and confirm that connector endpoints truly meet. Use Trim/Extend or reconnect the route.
  • Wrong system type: Check the system classification on the connector and the selected routing system.
  • Missing fittings: Review Routing Preferences for the selected duct or pipe type; Revit needs valid elbows, tees, transitions, and unions for automatic routing.
  • Unexpected flow behavior: Review connector direction and equipment flow configuration in the family editor.
  • Unresolved warnings: Do not ignore them. Warnings related to open connectors or failed connections often affect downstream calculations and schedules.

For larger projects, establish office standards for system naming, abbreviations, connector classifications, and approved content.
